Described variously as a distant diesel engine, an idling truck, an electrical transformer, or a deep rumble, the phenomenon has become known simply as \u201cThe Hum.\u201d Yet despite years of investigation, it remains one of the most intriguing mysteries in acoustics and human perception. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the most prominent figures studying the phenomenon is Canadian educator and researcher Dr. Glen MacPherson. His interest in The Hum began as a personal experience while living on Canada\u2019s west coast. Curiously, after moving to another city in the same region, he found that he could no longer hear the sound. The experience prompted years of investigation and eventually led to the creation of the <strong>World Hum Map and Database Project<\/strong> in 2012, an online platform that collects reports from people who believe they have experienced the phenomenon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the project represents one of the world\u2019s largest citizen-science efforts focused on unexplained low-frequency sound perception. The World Hum Map allows individuals from around the world to submit information about when, where, and how they hear The Hum. The database contains reports from North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, and elsewhere, enabling researchers to identify patterns that may otherwise go unnoticed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to MacPherson\u2019s project, people who experience The Hum often describe remarkably similar characteristics. The sound is frequently louder indoors than outdoors, tends to be most noticeable at night, and can often be masked by background noise such as fans or music. Perhaps most puzzling is that many sufferers report hearing the sound while family members or neighbours standing nearby hear nothing at all. The result is a phenomenon that sits at the intersection of acoustics, neuroscience, psychology, and environmental science.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-other-cases-around-the-world\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other cases around the world<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reports of mysterious humming noises stretch back decades. The Bristol Hum in England gained public attention during the 1970s when local residents inundated newspapers with complaints about a persistent unexplained drone. Later, similar reports emerged in Hythe, Plymouth, Southampton, Swansea, and other UK locations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the U.S., the most famous example is perhaps the <strong>Taos Hum<\/strong> in New Mexico, where enough residents reported hearing a mysterious low-frequency sound that formal investigations were commissioned. Another notable case emerged in Kokomo, Indiana, while back in Canada the <strong>Windsor Hum<\/strong> attracted international attention due to its apparent links with industrial activity across the Detroit River. When blast furnaces on nearby Zug Island ceased operations, reports of the Windsor Hum largely disappeared, suggesting at least some Hums have identifiable industrial causes. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Windsor Hum was a mysterious, low-frequency sound reported by residents of Windsor, Ontario, starting around 2011. It was described as a deep, rumbling noise, often compared to a distant idling diesel engine, and sometimes accompanied by vibrations that could be felt through walls and floors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These examples highlight an important point: there may not be a single explanation for every Hum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some researchers have focused on external sources. Low-frequency sound is notoriously difficult to locate because long wavelengths can travel considerable distances and pass through buildings with relatively little attenuation. Potential culprits include industrial machinery, ventilation systems, power infrastructure, pipelines, mining activity, wind turbines, ocean-generated vibrations, or atmospheric effects. The challenge is that many reported cases occur without any measurable environmental source being identified.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-is-it-in-the-brain\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is it in the brain?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent research from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has added weight to the theory that many cases of The Hum may originate within the auditory system itself. Researchers examined individuals who reported experiencing unexplained humming sounds and tested whether they possessed unusually sensitive low-frequency hearing or measurable sound emissions from their ears. Neither explanation adequately accounted for most cases. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, the researchers concluded that many experiences may represent a form of <strong>low-frequency tinnitus<\/strong>, although one that is perceived as coming from an external source rather than from within the head. This distinction is important because conventional tinnitus is often experienced as ringing, buzzing, or whistling sounds, whereas The Hum is typically perceived as a distant mechanical noise. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MacPherson\u2019s own work has increasingly explored similar possibilities. The World Hum project notes that some cases may involve internally generated auditory phenomena, while others could be linked to genuine environmental noise that only particularly sensitive individuals can detect. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the enduring mysteries is why only a small proportion of the population appears capable of hearing The Hum. Estimates suggest that between 2 and 4 percent of people may experience the phenomenon under certain conditions. Researchers have proposed several explanations, including variations in hearing sensitivity, neurological processing differences, heightened awareness of low-frequency vibrations, or interactions between environmental sounds and individual physiology. None of these theories has yet emerged as a comprehensive explanation. What is clear is that those affected often report significant consequences, including sleep disruption, headaches, anxiety, and reduced quality of life. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-citizen-science-and-future-research\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Citizen science and future research<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The World Hum Map demonstrates how citizen science can contribute to investigating unusual phenomena. By gathering thousands of observations from around the world, researchers can evaluate geographic clusters, compare experiences, and test competing hypotheses. The project\u2019s emphasis on evidence-based inquiry has also helped distinguish serious scientific investigation from the conspiracy theories that frequently surround unexplained phenomena. MacPherson has consistently advocated for disciplined research and data collection rather than speculation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the mystery is far from solved, recent studies suggest that there may be multiple forms of The Hum, some caused by identifiable environmental sources and others rooted in human auditory perception itself.
