To make sure Europeans\u00a0immediately know whether the online content they see is real or fake.<\/p>\n<p>The EU\u2019s comprehensive AI law enters into force in stages. From Sunday,\u00a0companies must ensure their AI systems like chatbots make it clear to users they are AI, or when an image or text has been created using AI, there must be a label saying so.<\/p>\n<p>This can be done by integrating watermarks and other markers to allow the easy detection of AI-generated content. Firms face large fines if they don\u2019t comply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenerative AI enables disinformation to be created at unprecedented scale, tailored to specific audiences, and disseminated with remarkable speed,\u201d an EU official said.<\/p>\n<p>Since AI is \u201cmaking it increasingly difficult for all of us to distinguish what is real from what is synthetic\u201d, the official said, the EU\u2019s rules seek to \u201cpreserve citizens\u2019 ability to trust what they see, hear, and read\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Of particular concern for the EU are deepfakes \u2014 text, images, videos and sounds that appear to be real but are generated or manipulated by AI.<\/p>\n<p>The rules affect content made for professional reasons, and the EU insists individuals using AI in a purely personal capacity will not be affected.<\/p>\n<p>Text that aims to inform the public on general interest issues will also have to be labelled if they are created using AI without human editorial oversight.<\/p>\n<p>Existing AI systems have until December 2 to adapt to the new rules, and there are exemptions for \u201cartistic, creative, satirical, \u202ffictional\u201d work.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Big Tech moves \u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The EU has come under fire for placing more demands on businesses, and rules that will ultimately force all content to be labelled given the rapidly growing widespread use of AI across Europe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have heard that it is going to be very, very difficult to implement. But I think we often hear this with compliance requirements. And yet, the world turns and we figure these things out,\u201d Ashley Casovan of International Association of Privacy Professionals told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s tech giants have already begun slapping their own labels in anticipation of the rules.<\/p>\n<p>For example, TikTok has required content creators to label AI-generated images, audio and video for several years, and says over three billion content items already have labels thanks to tools and detection technology.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Meta has deployed an \u201cAI Info\u201d label on Instagram and Facebook for posts using the technology.<\/p>\n<p>Google has signed the EU code of conduct on AI transparency, and says it is working with others like Nvidia, OpenAI and Apple on digital tagging tools.<\/p>\n<p>But Google\u2019s Karen Massin warns of \u201cregulatory complexity\u201d that could prove counterproductive, and \u201crisks confusing the people these rules are meant to help\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf online content is flooded with overlapping AI labels and legal disclosures, it becomes harder for people to get the clear context they need,\u201d Massin added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
