height: 750px; background: #ccc; display: grid; place-items: center;\">\r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e2\" data-zoneid=\"5876678\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  \r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e6\" data-zoneid=\"5876682\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-right:0;padding-left:0\">\n<p>South Korean and Japanese tech took another battering Tuesday, leading losses across most Asian stock markets, as a report of a breakthrough in China\u2019s chip industry compounded growing worries about the longevity of the AI boom.<\/p>\n<p>The losses extended a sell-off across the industry globally following an eye-watering rally over the past two years that has sent several indexes and companies to record highs.<\/p>\n<p>They also overshadowed a more upbeat outlook over the Middle East conflict as the United States and Iran paused tit-for-tat strikes for a third day and Donald Trump suggested there was a \u201cgood chance\u201d of a deal to end hostilities.<\/p>\n<p>Semiconductor firms were at the forefront of a region-wide rout Tuesday after website The Information said China\u2019s Shanghai Yuliangsheng had started mass production of a chipmaker technology long dominated by Dutch firm ASML.<\/p>\n<p>Seoul-listed SK hynix and Samsung lost around a tenth of their value, dragging the Kospi index down more than eight percent and sparking a 20-minute circuit-breaker.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The two firms have lost around 40 percent since hitting all-time highs last month, while the Kospi is down more than 30 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Tokyo\u2019s Nikkei tanked more than four percent at one point as Kioxia shed 15 percent, while Advantest and Tokyo Electron dived 10 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Taipei was also off more than three percent as market heavyweight and chip giant TSMC took a hit.<\/p>\n<p>There were also losses across most other markets, though Hong Kong was the standout as its tech firms enjoyed some much-needed buying following a painful first half of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday\u2019s hammering followed a bleak day on Wall Street, where the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 2.2 percent as Sandisk tanked 11 percent, while Advanced Micro Devices and Nvidia gave up around five percent.<\/p>\n<p>ASML shed more than 8 percent in Amsterdam.<\/p>\n<p>The AI trade was already fracturing in recent weeks owing to worries about the vast sums that had been invested in AI, which had fuelled questions about when that would actually begin seeing a return, while extended valuations had also raised eyebrows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe immediate fundamentals of semiconductors have not collapsed,\u201d wrote Stephen Innes at SPI Asset Management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemand for high-bandwidth memory remains strong, hyperscalers are still spending, and the largest technology companies have not yet abandoned their capital expenditure plans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat has changed is the market\u2019s willingness to capitalise those promises at almost any price.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AI trade spent the past several years behaving like a flywheel: rising equity values encouraged more spending, more spending validated higher earnings expectations, and those expectations pushed valuations higher again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow that same wheel is beginning to throw investors off at speed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Traders are awaiting earnings this week from SK hynix, Samsung and Kioxia as well as US titans Microsoft, Meta, Apple and Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>The bloodbath in tech overshadowed renewed optimism over the US-Iran crisis, with the two sides stepping back after almost two weeks of retaliatory attacks sparked by a breakdown in diplomacy over Tehran\u2019s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>Trump expressed hope that renewed diplomacy could bring an end to the war that began in late February.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a lot of patience\u2026 We\u2019ll see what happens,\u201d he said aboard Air Force One. \u201cI think there is a good chance that something could happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, reports said Oman and Iran were trying to reach an agreement to restart shipping through Hormuz,\u00a0through which a fifth of global oil and LNG usually pass.<\/p>\n<p>Hopes for a deal sent both mains sharply lower, with international benchmark Brent losing\u00a0more than eight percent\u00a0Monday and WTI more than seven percent.
