That translated into 33 cents per share compared with analyst estimates of 53 cents per share.<\/p>\n<p>Revenues rose 26 percent to $28.2 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla had impressed market watchers earlier this month when it released higher-than-expected second-quarter auto sales, due in part to a recovery in European markets.<\/p>\n<p>But the company\u2019s earnings press release said profitability was dented by lower vehicle sales prices, lower revenue from regulatory credits and an unspecified \u201cvendor cell issue\u201d that led to an increase in \u201cenergy warranty-related charges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tesla described its\u00a0expansion initiatives as in line with plans, saying it began production of its \u201cCybercab\u201d vehicle in Texas and that the Tesla Semi production \u201cremains on track\u201d for this year.<\/p>\n<p>In another closely watched item, Tesla reported gains in subscribers to its \u201cFSD\u201d driver-assistance program, boosting revenues.<\/p>\n<p>Musk is expected to face questions on Wednesday\u2019s conference call over Tesla\u2019s massive capital spending plans. Tesla has said it plans to spend more than $25 billion on ambitious initiatives in autonomous transport, humanoid robotics and artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTesla is in its largest and most exciting period of investment,\u201d the company said. \u201cFrom here, there remains much hard work as we aim to revolutionize transportation, energy and productivity through our leading real-world AI. Scaling will be non-linear, and we are focused on long-term value creation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Merger with SpaceX? \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday\u2019s report is Tesla\u2019s first earnings announcement since Musk successfully launched SpaceX as a publicly traded company in June, temporarily lifting Musk\u2019s fortune to over $1 trillion when shares of the rocket and satellite company soared in its initial sessions.<\/p>\n<p>Shares of SpaceX have cooled in the ensuing weeks, but the company\u2019s valuation at around $1.5 trillion has been viewed as a potential means to transact a combination between SpaceX and Tesla. That topic has generated significant speculation among Wall Street investors.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said in June that a combination \u201cmight make Elon\u2019s life a little easier,\u201d telling CNBC, \u201cThere\u2019s no question that there are synergies between Tesla and SpaceX in our futures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s sort of the elephant in the room surrounding the company,\u201d said CFRA analyst Garrett Nelson, who doesn\u2019t expect substantive comment from Musk or others on the question.<\/p>\n<p>Nelson expects questions on when Tesla\u2019s massive capital spending campaigns will pay off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe concern is that this is the start of a multi-year spree of capital spending,\u201d Nelson said. \u201cThey just haven\u2019t been very transparent with the Street on the expected return of the dollars that have been spent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In recent weeks, Tesla\u2019s technology has come under renewed scrutiny after a June car crash in which a Tesla Model 3 crashed at high speed into a home in Katy, Texas, killing a resident.<\/p>\n<p>Local authorities have charged the driver with manslaughter.<\/p>\n<p>There have also been persistent questions about when Tesla\u2019s autonomous driving systems will be adopted broadly. Musk has a history of making predictions of imminent widespread use that have consistently proven unrealistic.<\/p>\n<p>A recent note from Deutsche Bank described the rollout of Tesla\u2019s robotaxi service as \u201cslower than expected\u201d this year in Austin, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cmain issue we have been observing is wait time which is perhaps linked to vehicle availability,\u201d\u00a0Deutsche Bank said.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla shares dropped 2.4 percent in after-hours trading.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
