Yet according to enterprise transformation specialist Rick Catalano, AI may actually expose weaknesses that organizations have ignored for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Catalano\u2019s central message is stark: AI does not fix poor management, weak governance, or flawed transformation programmes. Instead, it accelerates outcomes, both good and bad alike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAI amplifies capability \u2014 but it amplifies whatever capability exists, good or bad,\u201d Catalano argues. Organizations with mature leadership structures and sound transformation practices can use AI to improve efficiency, decision-making, and business performance. Conversely, organizations with weak foundations risk automating dysfunction and scaling failure. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The warning comes as businesses continue investing heavily in artificial intelligence initiatives. While the technology promises significant productivity gains, experts increasingly recognize that implementation challenges often outweigh technical limitations.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-why-transformation-efforts-fail\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why transformation efforts fail<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Catalano draws upon three decades of experience leading complex enterprise programmes involving major technology platforms such as SAP, Oracle, and Salesforce. Throughout that career, he has seen a recurring pattern: organizations often focus on technology while neglecting the operational and cultural factors necessary for successful change. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His recently published book, <em>The AI Project Manager: The Framework for Successful AI-Enabled Enterprise Transformation<\/em>, addresses what he describes as persistently high failure rates in transformation programmes. According to Catalano, between 65 and 85 percent of major transformation initiatives fail to meet their objectives, despite significant investments of time and capital. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI kept seeing the same painful pattern repeat itself,\u201d Catalano notes. Organizations frequently launch ambitious initiatives with promising technology stacks, only to discover that decision-making structures are unclear, data quality is poor, stakeholders are disengaged, and expected benefits are never measured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many cases, technology performs exactly as intended. The failure instead stems from organizational shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the centre of Catalano\u2019s approach is the AMIGA Framework, a methodology designed to address transformation holistically rather than treating technology as a standalone solution. The framework consists of six interconnected dimensions:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People<\/li>\n<li>Process<\/li>\n<li>Technology<\/li>\n<li>Data<\/li>\n<li>Governance<\/li>\n<li>Value<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Catalano, many organizations focus heavily on the first three areas while neglecting governance, value realization, and data management\u2014the very elements that often determine whether a programme succeeds or fails.  Data quality, for example, is frequently underestimated. Organizations may successfully migrate data into a new system, yet if the underlying information is inaccurate or poorly governed, the new platform simply reproduces existing problems. When AI is added to the equation, those deficiencies can become amplified through automated decision-making and analytics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, governance failures can result in stalled decisions, unclear accountability, and scope creep, all of which undermine programme performance regardless of how advanced the technology may be.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-ai-as-a-force-multiplier\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI as a force multiplier<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most compelling aspects of Catalano\u2019s argument is his characterization of AI as a force multiplier rather than a standalone solution. This perspective contrasts with some of the more optimistic narratives surrounding generative AI and enterprise automation. Rather than treating AI as a replacement for leadership, Catalano positions it as a tool that enhances existing organizational capabilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The book includes more than 260 AI use cases spanning programme governance, project management, data migration, testing, stakeholder engagement, and value realization. The objective is not to automate management entirely but to enable leaders to make better-informed decisions throughout the transformation lifecycle. For organizations that already possess strong governance and disciplined execution, AI can accelerate analysis, improve reporting, and enhance operational visibility. For businesses lacking those fundamentals, however, AI may simply accelerate the rate at which problems emerge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another issue highlighted by Catalano concerns accountability. He claims that approximately 73 percent of organizations cannot clearly demonstrate what value their transformation initiatives have actually delivered. Without effective measurement frameworks, companies may spend millions of dollars implementing new systems while remaining unable to quantify returns on investment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This observation mirrors a broader challenge within digital transformation programmes. Success is often defined in terms of project completion rather than measurable business outcomes such as improved productivity, reduced operational costs, enhanced customer satisfaction, or increased revenue. Catalano\u2019s framework seeks to place value realization alongside technology deployment as a primary management discipline rather than a post-project activity.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-leadership-in-the-ai-era\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leadership in the AI era<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond technology, <em>The AI Project Manager<\/em> places considerable emphasis on leadership. Catalano advocates servant leadership principles designed to build trust, improve collaboration, and increase adoption of new systems and processes.  This focus reflects a growing consensus that successful digital transformation remains fundamentally a human endeavour.
