People memorized routes across oceans, recited epic poems, retained family histories, and remembered countless practical details needed for everyday life. Today, however, a profound shift is underway. Increasingly, people are no longer remembering information itself; instead, they are remembering where to find it.

A new survey conducted by MyIQ, involving 12,846 adults across the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and Latin America, suggests that digital technology is changing the way memory is used in everyday life. Rather than storing information internally, many people are relying on smartphones, cloud storage platforms, search engines, calendars, and digital reminders to act as external memory systems.

The findings reveal a population that is increasingly comfortable with outsourcing memory. According to the survey, 73 percent of respondents said they no longer make an effort to remember information that they know can be retrieved digitally. Furthermore, 68 percent rely on digital calendars and reminders for appointments they may once have remembered unaided.

This trend raises an interesting question: are people becoming more forgetful, or are they simply adapting to a world where information is permanently available on demand? This question connects with contemporary research, which frames intelligence in the digital age as a multidimensional capacity that includes traditional cognitive abilities alongside digital, social, emotional, and adaptive competencies.

The rise of “digital memory”

Researchers have been studying this phenomenon for more than a decade. One influential concept is the “Google Effect” or “digital amnesia”, which is described as the tendency for people to remember the location of information rather than the information itself.

The MyIQ survey appears to reflect this shift. Sixty-one percent of participants reported that they are more likely to remember where information is stored than the information itself. This suggests that memory is not necessarily declining; rather, it is being redirected toward retrieval strategies. In practical terms, most people no longer memorise dozens of telephone numbers. They know that the number is stored in their contacts. Similarly, few people attempt to remember a complicated route through an unfamiliar city when navigation applications provide real-time guidance.

The result is a restructuring of cognitive effort. Instead of committing facts to memory, people invest effort in organising, tagging, storing, and retrieving information from digital systems.

From an efficiency standpoint, this is difficult to argue against. Human memory is finite and fallible. Smartphones can store thousands of contacts, photographs, documents, passwords, and reminders with near-perfect fidelity.

When photographs become memory aids

One particularly interesting finding concerns the role of photography in preserving personal experiences. According to the survey, 58 percent of respondents reported searching through their own photo libraries to help recall events they could no longer remember clearly. Meanwhile, 55 percent said they sometimes take photographs partly because they trust the images to preserve the experience.

This illustrates how digital photographs have evolved beyond simple records. They now serve as memory prompts, helping individuals reconstruct past experiences and personal narratives.

The average smartphone user can accumulate tens of thousands of images over a relatively short period. These libraries increasingly function as searchable archives of personal history. Rather than relying solely on biological memory, individuals can revisit birthdays, holidays, family gatherings, and everyday moments through digital records.

Yet there may be a paradox at work. Some psychological studies have suggested that constantly photographing events can sometimes reduce attention to the experience itself. If people feel confident that a device is recording everything, they may devote less cognitive effort to encoding memories in the first place. As a result, technology may both preserve memories and alter the way those memories are formed.

This is in keeping with a continuity of definitions of intelligence, even in the so-termed digital age. This trajectory re-emphasises that modern intelligence includes critical thinking, emotional awareness, creativity, and the capacity to learn continuously.

A changing relationship with knowledge

The survey also highlights a broader transformation in society’s relationship with information. Historically, possessing knowledge often meant retaining facts internally. Educational systems rewarded memorisation, and professional expertise was often associated with the ability to recall information quickly. Today, access frequently matters more than retention.

In professions ranging from medicine to engineering, practitioners increasingly use digital databases, decision-support tools, and online resources. The key skill is often not remembering every fact, but knowing how to locate accurate information efficiently.

This change extends into everyday life. Shopping lists are stored in apps. Password managers replace the need to remember complex login credentials. Streaming services remember viewing preferences. Social media platforms remind users of birthdays and anniversaries.

The central tenet is that cognitive burden of remembering routine details has been substantially reduced. The idea that technology is weakening human cognition appears regularly in public debate. However, the evidence is more nuanced than simple claims of declining intelligence.

Many cognitive scientists argue that people are adapting to an information-rich environment. Human beings have always used external memory systems, from written notebooks and diaries to libraries and filing cabinets. Hence, digital technologies may simply represent the latest evolution of this process.

The difference lies in scale and immediacy. Smartphones provide continuous access to an external knowledge repository that accompanies users throughout the day. The boundary between internal and external memory is becoming increasingly blurred. Rather than reducing intelligence, this may be encouraging different cognitive skills. Information evaluation, critical thinking, digital organization, and effective retrieval strategies are arguably becoming more important than memorisation alone.

Nevertheless, dependence on digital memory systems carries risks. Anyone who has lost access to a smartphone, experienced a cloud outage, or forgotten a master password understands how vulnerable digital dependence can be. Information stored externally remains accessible only if the technology functions as intended.

There are also concerns regarding privacy and data security. The more personal memories, photographs, contacts, and life events that become digitised, the more valuable these repositories become to cybercriminals. Another issue is cognitive resilience. Some researchers suggest that regularly exercising memory remains important for maintaining certain mental functions, particularly as people age.

<div style="display: grid;
