It\u2019s something that can be used across pretty much any intellectual, reasoning, cognitive activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The technology\u2019s adaptability to different kinds of problems sets it apart from previous waves of computerised aids.<\/p>\n<p>Electronic calculators, for instance, may have helped users solve equations \u2014 but left the method and reasoning process in human hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Saving energy \u2013<\/p>\n<p>One 2025 MIT study went viral for its finding that students using generative AI to write essays displayed less critical thinking capability.<\/p>\n<p>Other research has pointed the same way, highlighting what has come to be called \u201ccognitive offloading\u201d \u2014 or even \u201ccognitive surrender\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHuman beings have a strong tendency to save energy,\u201d said Johann Chevalere, a researcher in social and cognitive psychology at France\u2019s publicly-funded CNRS institution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn daily life, we often use strategies that get us to the heart of the matter quicker, without necessarily taking the time to study in depth the information we need to process, as this can be cognitively costly,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Generative AI use could strengthen this tendency, Chevalere said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there are activities you never do, the brain \u2014 which works by saving energy \u2014 won\u2019t go to the trouble of maintaining connections that aren\u2019t being used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Encouraging reflection \u2013\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Under pressure from critics, generative AI developers have begun building so-called \u201cSocratic\u201d functions into their models, which for now remain mostly aimed at students.<\/p>\n<p>In this mode, chatbots do not simply provide the answer, instead offering hints and asking questions to stimulate users\u2019 thinking.<\/p>\n<p>Examples include the \u201cstudy mode\u201d built into OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT, or \u201cguided learning\u201d in Google\u2019s Gemini.<\/p>\n<p>US software giant Microsoft told AFP it had built warnings about the risk of mistakes into its Copilot models.<\/p>\n<p>The AI also reminds users to check the information it provides, just one of several measures designed to keep them actively and critically engaged with its responses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe risk of excessive cognitive offloading is real, especially if AI is used to automate tasks that are also valuable for developing skills,\u201d Microsoft said, adding that users have to be trained to use the tools correctly.<\/p>\n<p>For now, there is a lack of large-scale, long-term studies to judge the true impact of the new technology on human brains, researchers agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Until they are available, \u201cit\u2019s up to us to use AI in a smart way,\u201d Chevalere said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll adapt to this technological revolution just as we have to the previous ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
