It was the same with my friends, one has sent over 60 applications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2018Golden age\u2019 is gone \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Known the world over for cutting-edge technology and innovative design, Germany\u2019s car industry, powered by exports, has so far managed to avoid the drastic decline seen in countries like Britain, France and Italy.<\/p>\n<p>But Chinese carmakers like BYD and Xpeng have eaten into German carmakers\u2019 sales in the world\u2019s largest auto market, leading to painful adjustments at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTen years ago we made about six million vehicles a year and we\u2019ve now stabilised at about four, 4.2 million,\u201d transport economist Thomas Puls of the IW economic institute in Cologne told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s good compared to other European countries, but we now need to accept that the golden age is not coming back.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a sign of the times, workers on Thursday protested at Volkswagen sites across the country over reports that Germany\u2019s biggest carmaker is mulling up to 100,000 job cuts.<\/p>\n<p>Total employment in the German automotive sector fell eight percent in the five years to 2025, according to Federal Employment Agency (FEA) data, even as it grew a little over one percent overall.<\/p>\n<p>German industry as a whole is struggling against what some have dubbed the \u201cChina Shock 2.0\u201d as the country\u2019s firms shift away from low-value production and into making more high-tech goods, often at lower prices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is pushing German companies out of once reliable export markets.<\/p>\n<p>Total German exports were last year 1.56 trillion euros ($1.78 trillion), down almost two percent from a 2022 peak, according to data from statistics office Destatis.<\/p>\n<p>Exports to China meanwhile plunged almost a quarter to 81.3 billion euros over the same period.<\/p>\n<p>For Peil, who last year completed a traineeship at tyre-maker and industrial supplier Continental before it spun off its automotive business, the crisis meant it was clear he would not be taken on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven when I started you could see, and you\u2019d always read about it in the news, that this or that part of the business was being restructured,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when you see experienced colleagues going, then you know it\u2019s unlikely you\u2019ll be hired for the role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2018What\u2019s wrong?\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Anja Robert, who for 20 years has led the careers service at one of Germany\u2019s leading engineering schools, told AFP that even some of the best students now had to search a while.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s people who come to us and say, \u2018Wow, I\u2019ve written 30 applications and heard hardly anything back: What\u2019s wrong?\u2019\u201d, said Robert, head of careers at RWTH Aachen University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not the case anymore that you just get your application in with BMW and you get a job.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Qualified engineers last year had an unemployment rate of 3.8 percent, according to the FEA data, an increase of almost 50 percent compared to 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Electrical engineer Luca Linhsen is one of the luckier ones \u2014 she took up a job as a software consultant in Hamburg this month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But she still had to endure a \u201cfrustrating\u201d months-long job hunt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs engineers we were led to understand when beginning our studies that you\u2019ve practically got a job even before finishing the degree,\u201d she told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want to study engineering, do it because you have a passion for technology.
