And so that\u2019s why we\u2019re keeping the exact details and date confidential,\u201d said Ricketts, describing the high-security operation around the 11th century work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it\u2019s ready to be exhibited, we want millions of people to see it,\u201d added Ricketts, Britain\u2019s former ambassador to France.<\/p>\n<p>The clandestine arrangements have done little to dampen enthusiasm. Ricketts said he was \u201cnot at all surprised\u201d that the British Museum sold a record 100,000 tickets on the first day of sales for the exhibition, set to open on September 10 and run until July 11, 2027.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery British child knows the date of 1066, the Battle of Hastings,\u201d when England\u2019s King Harold was defeated by the Norman invader William the Conqueror, depicted in the 68-metre (224-feet) long tapestry, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The battle changed the course of history for England, France and Europe, \u201cbut most people don\u2019t know the tapestry, most people haven\u2019t been to Bayeux\u201d to see it, said Ricketts.<\/p>\n<p>Embroidered in wool thread, the tapestry tells its story in words and images, but its origins have remained shrouded in some mystery and much speculation.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first time the tapestry, which usually rests in a museum in Bayeux in northwestern Normandy, will be transported to and displayed in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>For its cross-Channel journey, the tapestry has been \u201cfolded up like a curtain\u201d and \u201cput in a very, very high-tech container\u201d with climate and vibration controls to protect the delicate embroidery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will come on a truck, and it will come under the (Channel) tunnel on the shuttle service, and then it will be driven straight to London to the back of the British Museum,\u201d said Ricketts.<\/p>\n<p>The complicated transfer of the tapestry, which was promised by French President Emmanuel Macron in a loan, is the result of more than a year of negotiations for the former ambassador.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2018Indelible memory\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Despite fears voiced by some over transporting the ancient artwork, Ricketts did not waver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw the experts working together, the conservators, the people who really know about the risks of moving the object,\u201d said Ricketts, who now sits in the UK\u2019s unelected upper chamber the House of Lords.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they had said it\u2019s impossible without damage to the tapestry, nobody would have pressed them on that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut their approach was always \u2014 let\u2019s work out the way to do this safely, and one by one we overcame all the different issues,\u201d added the tapestry envoy.<\/p>\n<p>As for the insurance, which has valued the tapestry at some \u00a3800 million (nearly $1.1 billion) \u2014 backed by the UK Treasury \u2014 every effort is being made to ensure that it does not have to be used.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll our work is to ensure that the tapestry goes back to France \u2014 and it will go back to France, I promise, safe and sound,\u201d said Ricketts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, if there is damage yes, the British taxpayer is on the hook to pay damages. But that just shows how serious we are about ensuring that it goes back in good condition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once in London, the tapestry will be displayed flat, for the first time, in a specially made glass case in a \u201cchoreography with I think 80 different conservators \u2014 intensely careful, difficult work\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The British Museum\u2019s exhibition on Tutankhamun \u2014 which drew a record 1.69 million visitors in 1972 \u2014 transformed the way visitors viewed ancient Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the\u00a0tapestry will have the same effect as that for millions of people,\u201d said the envoy, adding it would \u201cleave an indelible memory\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this will change people\u2019s mind about thinking about the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
