\t<\/div>Boxing legend Ricky Hatton died from injuries \u2018consistent with hanging\u2019, an inquest has heard. <\/p>\n
Hatton, one of British boxing\u2019s most celebrated figures, was found dead on the morning of 14 September aged 46.<\/p>\n
An inquest at Stockport Coroner\u2019s Court on Friday heard the 48-year-old was found on the pool table of the games room at his home in Hyde, Manchester by his manager Paul Speak.<\/p>\n
Senior Coroner Ms Mutch\u2019s verdict said: \u2018Richard John Hatton died having suspended himself from a ligature. (His) intention remains unclear as he was under the influence of alcohol and a neurological post-mortem found evidence of CTE.\u2019<\/p>\n
Hatton\u2019s family, including son Campbell, wept in court as the findings were returned.<\/p>\n
A pathologist recorded a cause of death as \u2018hanging\u2019 with \u2018no evidence to suggest suspicious circumstances.\u2019<\/p>\n
A toxicology report revealed findings \u2018consistent with alcohol intoxication\u2019 at the time of death. The level of alcohol was equivalent of being twice the legal drink drive limit, the court heard.<\/p>\n While the there was evidence of \u2018prior cocaine use\u2019 the doctor explained there was no evidence the drug was consumed leading up to his death.<\/p>\n The doctor said he found evidence of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) although this was at the \u201cmilder end of the spectrum of this disease’\u201d\u2018. It was noted it was \u2018not possible\u2019 to determine the process by which Mr Hatton was affected by CTE.<\/p>\n A statement on behalf of Hatton\u2019s mother Carol read she had seen her son two days before his death. While they discussed his return to the ring, she noted his \u2018eyes were sad\u2019 as they spoke.<\/p>\n She said \u2018the last hug he gave me almost broke my ribs\u2019.<\/p>\n Ricky\u2019s son Campbell Hatton told the inquest he did not believe his father\u2019s decision to end his life was \u2018pre-meditated.\u2019<\/p>\n Campbell, who fought professionally himself before retiring last year, revealed his father had already packed his bags for a trip to Dubai he was due to take the day after his death.<\/p>\n Campbell said his father was in his \u2018best place\u2019 for years after battles with his mental health and addiction but his family had noticed \u2018significant decline in his short term memory\u2019 in recent years.<\/p>\n A coroner\u2019s court hearing last year heard the former fighter was found unresponsive by his long-time manager and close friend Speak.<\/p>\n Speak was due to pick up Hatton and accompany him to Manchester Airport for a flight to Dubai.<\/p>\n The court heard Hatton was last seen by family members on the Friday night before he died and \u2018appeared well\u2019 during a dinner.<\/p>\n His brother Matthew said his older sibling was \u2018the best he has been by a long way\u2019 before his death and he never expected the champion boxer to take his own life.<\/p>\n Hatton had also been scheduled to return to the ring last December against Eisa Al Dah\u00a0in Dubai. <\/p>\n His tragic death rocked British sport with countless\u00a0fans and high-profile sporting figures flooding social media with personal tributes to the former world champion in the weeks that followed.<\/p>\n![\"Ray](\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SEI_290235120-4621.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=646\")
