That model is beginning to change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, increasing numbers of consumers are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) assistants to answer legal questions, identify appropriate legal specialists, estimate fees, and even recommend law firms. Instead of typing \u201cbest employment lawyer near me\u201d into a search engine, a prospective client may ask an AI assistant: <em>\u201cI was dismissed from my job\u2014what type of lawyer do I need?\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201cWhich firms have experience with immigration appeals?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This shift could fundamentally alter how law firms attract clients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new case study from AI search optimisation company Algomizer suggests that businesses with stronger AI visibility may gain a substantial competitive advantage. According to the anonymised study, a mid-sized professional services firm that improved how AI systems interpreted its services achieved:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A 157 percent increase in qualified leads from AI-influenced channels<\/li>\n<li>A 43 percent reduction in client acquisition costs<\/li>\n<li>A 63 percent appearance rate across relevant service queries<\/li>\n<li>A 28 percent increase in new client portfolio value linked to AI channel optimisation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the study focused primarily on financial services, the implications for legal services are significant. Increasingly, AI systems are performing a role traditionally occupied by search engines. They are summarising information, comparing providers, answering questions and influencing commercial decisions before a user ever visits a website. For law firms, that means visibility is no longer simply about ranking highly in search results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The challenge extends beyond appearing in AI-generated answers. A law firm may be mentioned by an AI assistant yet still lose potential business if the description is inaccurate or incomplete. If AI systems misunderstand services, explain them poorly, or associate a firm with the wrong area of expertise, prospective clients may never make contact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Algomizer study found that the strongest gains came from improving how services were described and structured for machine interpretation. This included clear service descriptions, structured fee information, and consistent specialist expertise signals.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-evolution-from-seo-to-ai-optimisation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The evolution from SEO to AI optimisation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This development reflects a broader trend occurring across multiple industries. Digital marketers increasingly refer to concepts such as AI Search Optimisation, Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO), and Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO).\u00a0 Unlike traditional SEO, which focuses on ranking web pages, AI optimisation focuses on ensuring that large language models and AI assistants can properly understand, retrieve and summarise information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The distinction is important.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A website may rank highly on Google while simultaneously being poorly represented by AI platforms. Conversely, organisations with structured, authoritative and consistently presented information may find themselves recommended by AI systems even if they are not the dominant search result. These factors can influence how AI systems assess credibility and expertise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not necessarily all about big players. The case study suggests that smaller and medium-sized firms may be able to compete effectively if they provide information that is easier for AI systems to interpret. A boutique employment law practice with highly structured content and clearly defined expertise may outperform a larger competitor whose digital information is fragmented or inconsistent.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-legal-services-in-canada\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Legal services in Canada<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trend is particularly relevant in Canada, where legal services are becoming increasingly digital. Canadian clients have embraced virtual consultations, electronic document exchange and online legal resources. At the same time, Canada\u2019s broader financial and professional services sectors are experiencing rapid AI adoption, creating growing consumer familiarity with AI-driven information services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Law firms in major centres such as Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal are already investing in AI-assisted legal research, document review automation, and contract analysis tools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As AI becomes more integrated into everyday digital life, it is likely that Canadians will increasingly use conversational AI systems as an early step in legal decision-making. There are also regulatory considerations. Canadian legal professionals remain subject to strict requirements concerning advertising, professional conduct and misleading information. This creates an additional challenge: ensuring that AI-generated descriptions of legal services remain accurate and compliant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One interesting consequence of AI-driven discovery is the increasing importance of demonstrable expertise. AI systems often rely on indicators such as published articles, professional profiles, consistent service descriptions, and structured website content. These signals help determine whether a firm is considered authoritative in a particular field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means legal professionals may need to think more strategically about thought leadership, educational content and online presence.
