She was my best friend and very supportive with snooker,\u2019 Muir told <strong>Metro<\/strong>. \u2018She has been with me for the whole journey. She always loved watching my games and we always chatted after the games. I took a step aside from practice. I was just going tournament to tournament and every other ounce of my time was put onto my mum to try and find ways to help her, ways to make her better.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>After his time spent looking after Margaret, she left him with words of encouragement to get back to focussing on snooker.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018She had a good talk with us,\u2019 he said. \u2018She wanted us to look forward. She wanted me to be a snooker player again. She appreciated all the time that we spent together. But she did ask me to be a snooker player again, so that\u2019s what I\u2019m trying to be.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018After the World Championship [qualifiers], I shook Robbie Williams\u2019 hand, got in the car, came back home and that was me back into work mode. The following day I was on the practice table and I\u2019ve been working harder than I\u2019ve ever worked before. I\u2019ve been tackling all the technical problems that were in my game. I\u2019m really delighted with how things have come out.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I realise there\u2019s two ways a tragic event like this can impact a person: very negatively or you can use it as a driving force. That\u2019s what I\u2019ve tried my best to do.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/GettyImages-2266785670.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28924951\" alt=\"World Open Snooker 2026 - Day 1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Muir has faced a string of snooker greats on tour (Picture: Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018There are great signs going forward, as an opponent I\u2019m a different prospect than I\u2019ve been for a couple of years. I\u2019m starting to play proper snooker again. I don\u2019t need to try and grind things out like I was doing over the last year.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The world number 109 needs to show those improvements on the table this season if he is to hold onto his tour card, but he is confident deep runs are in there.<\/p>\n<p>He practices with the likes of John Higgins, Anthony McGill and Scott Donaldson in his base in Musselburgh \u2013 an old church building his table has been in for years.<\/p>\n<p>On his ceiling of the last 16 so far in his career, he said: \u2018That\u2019s definitely not my limitation by any means. Over the years I\u2019ve been a little bit turbulent with various different things. I\u2019m trying to just be a bit more consistent and a bit more stable.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I certainly don\u2019t want to be in a position of just grinding by, getting near the top 64, falling off, resetting. That\u2019s not what I want to do, I want to be pushing a lot further forward than that. And I definitely know that I\u2019ve got the game, I\u2019ve got the determination to do that, and that\u2019s definitely the two things that that are required to achieve that.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"430\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/GettyImages-459585764.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28961755\" alt=\"2014 Coral UK Championship - Day 1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Muir first joined the tour as a teenager (Picture: Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Of his career turbulence, there was nothing more destabilising than the ocular migraines he suffered so badly that he thought he was retired from snooker in his twenties.<\/p>\n<p>He suffered the nightmare condition in 2019, leading to falling off the professional tour as he was hit by significant vision loss on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I was pretty much not seeing anything,\u2019 he explained. \u2018It was 90 per cent vision loss when it was at its worst. I think it was pressure driven, so generally the more pressurised the match was, the worse it would get.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There\u2019s no pain at all involved in it. The way I would describe it is you\u2019re in a room that\u2019s filled with smoke. And it was every single day, sometimes multiple times a day.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"\/>\n<p>Muir thought his career was over when the issue was at its worst, saying: \u2018When I fell off the tour, at the end of the second year of suffering, I was done with it. I thought, what\u2019s point of battling when you can\u2019t see, when I can\u2019t see the break-off? There seemed no point in pursuing it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t pick up his cue for six months and the issue eased, with the pressure of matches one of the triggers to bring on the migraines.<\/p>\n<p>Muir also found out there were triggers based on diet, fitness, stress and he has worked out a lifestyle that keeps them under control.<\/p>\n<p>The Scot thought snooker was over for him and got security jobs in Edinburgh at an office building and railway station, but the lure of the baize brought him back.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I was comfortable for a while, but missing snooker started to creep in and that feeling became a little bit too strong,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It took me probably a year to get my game back. That year I was absolutely awful, losing first rounds in Q School, Scottish snooker, I couldn\u2019t win a match. I was doing it as a bit of fun as a hobby. But I think because you\u2019d been doing snooker that long, that\u2019s not really acceptable.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He put the hard work in to get his game back in shape, while controlling his diet and fitness to keep the ocular migraines at bay.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Talking Snooker Episode 256 - China Open qualifying + Your Views\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/show\/59AWrIPMH2sgTOhDSDUQhS?utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Muir returned to tour in 2023 by winning the European Amateur Championship and has a very positive outlook on his sport after feeling that it had been taken from him.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019m absolutely delighted. Snooker\u2019s a wonderful job,\u2019 he said. \u2018I\u2019m very lucky to be able to play the game professionally. I\u2019m very grateful for that opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018At that point in my life when it was at its worst, I wasn\u2019t really going anywhere. It was certainly a concerning time. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018As a whole I\u2019m very fortunate. It\u2019s a perspective thing. That\u2019s something that I\u2019m always very mindful of and now I use it as a form of motivation in, in the sense of, right, I\u2019ve got access to these pro events.
