height: 750px; background: #ccc; display: grid; place-items: center;\">\r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e2\" data-zoneid=\"5876678\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  \r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e6\" data-zoneid=\"5876682\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-right:0;padding-left:0\">\n<p>The Bank for International Settlements warned Sunday of multiple \u201cpressure points\u201d in the global economy, from inflation fuelled by the Middle East war to fears of cooling AI investments, threatening financial stability.<\/p>\n<p>In its annual report, published Sunday, the BIS \u2014 considered the central bank of central banks \u2014 called on monetary policy makers to \u201cact now\u201d, to help safeguard the stability of the global economy.<\/p>\n<p>BIS deputy general manager Andrea Maechler acknowledged the situation was difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCentral banks are already facing a complex situation in a world marked by a great deal of uncertainty,\u201d she told AFP in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2018Threatening financial stability\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>In all, BIS identified four significant pressure points for the global economy, starting with inflation linked to the Middle East war, which began with US-Israeli strikes on Tehran on February 28.<\/p>\n<p>The resulting closure of the crucial Strait of Hormuz \u2014 one of the world\u2019s most important energy chokepoints \u2014 has delivered a shock to global energy supplies, hiking costs for everything from plastics to fertilisers.<\/p>\n<p>Also on the BIS list were concerns over the longevity of the artificial intelligence investment boom, which has been buoying global growth and keeping it going through crises like last year\u2019s tariff hikes.<\/p>\n<p>BIS warned the surging AI capital expenditure could prove \u201cunsustainable\u201d, with the risk of a financial market correction.<\/p>\n<p>And the report highlighted the dangerous combination of persisting financial vulnerabilities and the \u201cexuberant risk appetite\u201d in financial markets, warning the situation \u201ccould unwind abruptly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Higher public debt levels were also an issue for central banks, it said, as they could find themselves torn between making necessary rate-hikes to keep down inflation and fears that doing so would hike debt servicing costs, impacting economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach of these areas of tension is likely to be manageable, but taken together, they risk amplifying one another and threatening financial stability,\u201d Maechler warned.<\/p>\n<p>She cautioned that \u201cif tensions were to arise on that front, for example in the event of a change in interest rates or market sentiment, contagion effects could be set in motion\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>BIS is also concerned about risks linked to the swelling role of non-bank players like hedge funds in bond markets and in AI investments, and is calling for more oversight over such operations.<\/p>\n<p>There must be \u201cadequate regulation also beyond the banking perimeter\u201d, to ensure they can absorb the risks they take, Maechler said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Preserving independence \u2013<\/p>\n<p>BIS is also calling on governments to reduce their debt levels to help preserve central banks\u2019 room for manoeuvre in the case of economic shocks.<\/p>\n<p>Maechler, herself a former governing board member at the Swiss National Bank, said it was vital for central banks to \u201cbe able to carry out their mandate with complete independence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This was needed, she said, \u201cto defend this fundamental public good, namely price stability and confidence in money, without which an economy cannot function well\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Maechler highlighted that \u201ccentral banks know that they may have to make difficult decisions that would not have political support at the time they need to be made\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor this, they need this independence.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
