It is still produced at the Pontedera site in Tuscany.<\/p>\n<p>It was \u201cthe symbol of an Italy emerging from the war and getting back on its feet,\u201d Gualtieri said, adding that he was \u201cproud\u201d that Piaggio had decided to organise the anniversary in the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTelling the story of 80 years of the Vespa is, in part, telling the story of how Rome has managed to capture the world\u2019s imagination\u201d, particularly through cinema, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2018Vespa is special\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>The four days of celebrations began on Thursday with the inauguration of a \u201cVespa Village\u201d at the Foro Italico, a sports complex in the north of the capital, and will culminate on Saturday with a grand parade through the streets of Rome.<\/p>\n<p>More than 10,000 \u201cVespisti\u201d from all over the globe are expected to turn up in the scooters, which are instantly recognisable because of their rounded lines, their brightly coloured metal bodywork and their round headlight mounted on the handlebars.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Ward, 57, and his sister Julie Stover, 63, came from the United States and rented a Vespa in Rome to take part in the parade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had scooters and motorcycles our whole lives. But I always wanted a Vespa and eventually we got Vespas. Now I have two!\u201d Ward, a regular at \u201cVespisti\u201d gatherings in his country, told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a high-quality scooter. And it comes with a certain status. It\u2019s classy, you know. It\u2019s not like the cheapy scooters that you see on the road all the time. Vespa is special,\u201d Stover added.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Social significance \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Designed to be a popular and affordable means of transport, the Vespa \u2014 which benefited from all sorts of innovations derived from aviation, Piaggio\u2019s core business \u2014 also has social significance.<\/p>\n<p>Its history is intertwined with \u201cthe history of a country emerging from the post-war period, that wants to move, that wants to get back up,\u201d Matteo Colaninno, executive chairman of the Piaggio group, said at the presentation of the celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd this desire to move is not just physical mobility,\u201d it is also \u201ca kind of drive toward economic mobility and above all social mobility,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, the Vespa has become a global phenomenon; we are on the verge of 20 million vehicles produced\u201d since 1946, Colaninno said.<\/p>\n<p>Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, photographed on Thursday sitting on a white Vespa in the reception rooms of Palazzo Chigi, the main government building, praised the famous scooter as representing not only \u201cindustrial excellence\u201d but also \u201cone of the most cherished Italian icons in the world, a symbol of Italian creativity and style\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a legend,\u201d said Franco Gaudino, 52, speaking to AFP as he took part in the Roman event with his club from La Louviere, in Belgium.<\/p>\n<p>Illac Diaz, originally from the Philippines, said that \u201cthe nice thing about the Vespa is you bring friendship\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no place where you park without people becoming friends.
