Singapore, Wellington and Manila edged up.<\/p>\n<p>The tepid performance followed a sharp drop on Wall Street, where the Nasdaq sank more than one percent as market giants Amazon, Nvidia and Microsoft were sharply down.<\/p>\n<p>But the main victim of the day was Elon Musk\u2019s SpaceX, which plunged more than 16 percent \u2014 wiping hundreds of billions off its valuation \u2014 after a record IPO and a winning trio of opening trading sessions.<\/p>\n<p>The fall came as the rocket and satellite company disclosed plans for an \u201cinaugural\u201d bond offering of unspecified quantity.<\/p>\n<p>The SpaceX disclosure arrives on the heels of a large equity round announced earlier this month by Google parent Alphabet and a data centre venture between Microsoft and Chevron, developments which underscore the hefty capital toll of the artificial intelligence drive.<\/p>\n<p>Monday\u2019s selling revived worries about the wisdom of the vast sums being pumped into artificial intelligence with little sign of any returns being made soon.<\/p>\n<p>Traders are also fretting over the extended valuations of some firms, with Nvidia topping $5 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the sector has performed exceptionally well, valuations have become stretched and the bar is now materially higher than it was a few months ago,\u201d wrote Tony Sycamore at IG.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQuestions around\u00a0 capital expenditure and returns on artificial intelligence spending remain unanswered.\u00a0While names like Intel\u00a0and\u00a0 Micron\u00a0are hitting fresh record highs, the Magnificent Seven (of top tech firms) has lost considerable momentum in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmazon\u00a0and Nvidia\u00a0are trading around 12 percent below their recent peaks, while Microsoft\u00a0and\u00a0 Meta Platforms\u00a0sit not far above their March lows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oil prices edged up, though they remain below $80 following Monday\u2019s drop that came after the US Treasury said it was temporarily lifting sanctions on Iran to allow it to produce, sell and deliver crude oil and related products through August 21.<\/p>\n<p>Maritime trackers also pointed to an uptick in tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>US Vice President JD Vance said a \u201cvery good foundation\u201d had been laid for negotiations towards a final deal and that Iran would allow UN nuclear inspectors to return to the country.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said for his part that \u201ca very brief discussion took place regarding the nuclear issue, but there was no discussion of details\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump said the strait, the critical channel for much of the world\u2019s oil, is now \u201ctotally open\u201d to shipping after Iran closed it in response to US and Israeli forces bombing the country late February.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re negotiating. We\u2019ll see how that all goes.
