Some accused him of censoring the press through his ban on cameras in the courtroom, while others theorized that he had a personal relationship with the family of slain high school football jock Austin Metcalf.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Judge John Roach Jr. agreed with the jury\u2019s conviction and sentence for Karmelo Anthony. <span class=\"credit\">Judge John Roach Jr.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Metcalf, 17, was fatally stabbed by Anthony, now 19, who also played high school football, during a dispute over seating at a track and field meet in Frisco on April 2, 2025. <\/p>\n<p>The murder case went viral as the as heightened tensions escalated over race, with some trying to paint Metcalf, who was white, as a bully who targeted Anthony, who was black.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony\u2019s defense claimed self-defense, but the teen didn\u2019t take the stand during the trial.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Anthony, now 19, was sentenced to 35 years in prison for first-degree murder. <span class=\"credit\">Texas Dept. of Criminal Justice<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Roach told WFAA Thursday that he tuned out most of the external noise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as I follow the law, I sleep well at night,\u201d he admitted.<\/p>\n<p>The jury, which didn\u2019t feature a single black member, also came under fire for the 35-year prison sentence it doled out to Anthony.<\/p>\n<p>Jurors rejected a proposed \u201csudden passion\u201d argument that would\u2019ve downgraded his verdict from first-degree to second-degree murder and shrunk his steep punishment to a maximum of 20 years.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Anthony fatally stabbed Austin Metcalf, 17. <span class=\"credit\">Meghan Prall Metcalf\/Facebook<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Roach told the outlet, however, that the jury reached the correct verdict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes they did because they were picked based upon the law, they listened to the facts, it happened in this courtroom, and they got a verdict,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Roach thought Anthony seemed \u201clike a nice young man\u201d who now has a better understanding of \u201cthe consequences of committing a crime like he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Anthony and Metcalf got into a spat over seating at a track and field meet in Frisco, Texas. <span class=\"credit\">Fox4<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A devastated Anthony burst into tears when the jury read the guilty verdict on Tuesday. And he kept his head down when Metcalf\u2019s distraught family addressed him during his sentencing later that evening.<\/p>\n<p>He only raised his head when Metcalf\u2019s twin brother, Hunter, asked him to. <\/p>\n<p>The only visual snapshots from the trial were all captured by courtroom illustrators on account of Roach\u2019s camera ban.
