White-identifying PS3 community members \u2013 SIGN UP HERE,\u201d reads the invite posted on the school\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The PS 3 Charrette School in Manhattan\u2019s Greenwich Village is hosting a workshop for parents and staffers to participate in \u201clistening circles\u201d that separate them into groups by race and ethnicity. <span class=\"credit\">Google maps<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The June 16 \u201cListening Circles\u201d event is being organized in partnership with a consulting firm called Liberation Spaces that promotes \u201cequity and liberation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFolks will gather on zoom with Liberation Spaces for initial guidelines, and then break out into smaller affinity groups with the facilitators based on racial identity,\u201d reads the invitation for parents and educators.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cBring your valuable perspective and ideas for the future of our school,\u201d it states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBIPOC Folks \u2013 Educators, staff, parents and caregivers who identify as Black, Indigenous, Latinx\/Hispanic, Asian, and other people of color \u2013 SIGN UP HERE,\u201d it adds \u2014 while white parents and teachers are told to participate in a separate group.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom of the invitation cites sources of support for the program, including an article titled \u201cWhy People of Color Need Spaces Without White People\u201d and another headlined \u201cBecoming an Anti-racist White Ally: How a White Affinity Group Can Help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some families and educators were shocked at being advised to separate into groups by race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe PS 3 PTA Charrette Listening Circles facilitated by Liberation Spaces is planning on segregating parents into \u2018BIPOC Folks\u2019 and \u2018White-identifying\u2019 affinity groups,\u201d noted Moshe Spern, president of United Jewish Teachers who said he was contacted by PS 3 parents who objected to the event.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The move has been slammed as discriminatory and illegal by legal experts. <span class=\"credit\">WavebreakMediaMicro \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t build community. Instead, it divides and isolates families,\u201d Spern said.<\/p>\n<p>One civil rights lawyer said separating parents or educators by race was clearly illegal, citing the 1954 landmark US Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education that struck down racial segregation or \u201cseparate but equal\u201d education as unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSegregating public school parents by race or ethnicity is not only offensive, it\u2019s also unlawful,\u201d said William Jacobson, a Cornell University law professor and founder of the Equal Protection Project, a nonprofit conservative advocacy organization.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe federal civil rights statutes cover all aspects of school programming, not just what happens in the classroom,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSegregating faculty and staff by race or ethnicity also may be an unlawful employment practice,\u201d Jacobson added. \u201cOutsourcing these programs to an outside consultant does not insulate the school from liability and responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>An invite from the school\u2019s website shows, \u201cHow does whiteness affect the collective child experience at PS3, as well as the entire community? White-identifying PS3 community members \u2013 SIGN UP HERE.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">WavebreakMediaMicro \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A majority of PS3\u2019s roughly 600 students are white.<\/p>\n<p>Spern noted Jewish parents and teachers are not even mentioned on the program description, despite a surge in antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t the time to hide from issues, especially those facing the Jewish community. We should have real conversations around race and bias but needs to be done in a way that makes everyone feel safe and inclusive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PS 3 refers to itself as a \u201ccharrette\u201d school that touts group brainstorming.<\/p>\n<p>The school principal, Hillary Casado, declined to comment.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Educators were shocked by the planned event as President of United Jewish Teachers, Moshe Sperm, said the school is \u201cis planning on segregating parents into \u2018BIPOC Folks\u2019 and \u2018White-identifying\u2019 affinity groups.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">michaeljung \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A spokesperson for Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels and the Department of Education said the PS 3 parents association was running the \u201cListening Circles\u201d program, not the school administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew York City Public Schools remains focused on fostering welcoming, inclusive environments where all students and families feel respected and supported. CUNY claimed the program is open to all, despite its name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRace can never play a role when deciding how to distribute educational resources or opportunities,\u201d said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K.
