Through this, women earn $7.25 per hour while being able to reduce their prison sentences.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI think a lot of us have a lot of guilt and remorse and shame\u2026 doing this and giving back to the community and pushing your body physically to points that you never thought possible, and it\u2019s rewarding,\u201d a women previously arrested for DUI told ABC10.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A female firefighter in full gear, including helmet, mask, and breathing apparatus. <span class=\"credit\">cdcr.ca.gov<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Outside of the CAL FIRE and CDCR joint program, the Central California Women\u2019s Facility (CCWF) also houses incarcerated women while giving them a chance for redemption.  <\/p>\n<p>Located in Chowchilla, the CCWF also trains female prisoners to be firefighters, but in ways that do not revolve around wildland firefighting.<\/p>\n<p>Priscilla Charris, one of the inmates, talked about the fulfillment she felt in helping others.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Priscilla Charris, an incarcerated firefighter, operating fire truck equipment. <span class=\"credit\">cdcr.ca.gov<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI have so many reasons why (I love this job), but the most important reason is giving back to the community that I took from. I did my crime and I\u2019m here paying a price for that,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I love about this job, is everything\u2026 I love the sisterhood (and) the guidance,\u201d Charris continued. <\/p>\n<p>The training includes a \u201ctool out\u201d inspection, where firefighters\u2019 equipment is checked and their fire knowledge tested. Participants then complete a one-hour hike, a fire shelter drill and an hour of fire line construction.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>CDCR inmate firefighters clear vegetation with hand tools during a wildland fire training exercise. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>California sees nearly 8,000 wildfires each year, and CAL FIRE relies heavily on hand crews to help contain them. Nearly half of those crews are made up of incarcerated men and women, according to state officials.<\/p>\n<p>As of April 2026, roughly 1,920 incarcerated firefighters were assigned to fire camps across California, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said.<\/p>\n<p>Once deployed, the work can be relentless.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Inmates in protective gear fight a wildfire with tools. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>CDCR said inmate firefighters may work 24-hour shifts from 7 a.m. to 7 a.m. before getting a 24-hour recovery period. Others work 12-hour shifts followed by an equal amount of rest.<\/p>\n<p>Lieutenant Michael Bennett, who oversees the program, said the women in the camps consistently prove themselves among the state\u2019s toughest firefighters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe men crews, you\u2019ll see they\u2019ll cut a line, and it might be 300-400 yards, but it\u2019s squiggly. It\u2019s not straight. The females will go up there, and it\u2019s perfectly straight because of attention to detail,\u201d Bennett said. \u201cI always tell people, I will take the female crew that I have here against any male crew any day.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Four incarcerated women firefighters sitting on the front of a fire truck. <span class=\"credit\">cdcr.ca.gov<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The firefighting program is voluntary, and inmates must earn a spot through a competitive selection process. Not everyone qualifies.<\/p>\n<p>For those who do, the camps offer more than just a chance to fight fires. Many participants say they are focused on building a better future, accepting they cannot change their past while working to forge a new path through service.<\/p>\n<p>State data suggests the program may be paying off.
