Its pitch at Summit was that the platform holding a company\u2019s data should also run the AI agents that act on it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King Township got there by first pulling its data, starting with waste and recycling records collected through Green For Life Environmental and its Recycle Coach app, out of dozens of separate systems and into one governed platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frontline staff can now ask whether rising use of the recycling app is changing recycling behaviour and follow up in real time, work that used to route through Cheng-Perri\u2019s team. Much of what surfaced at Snowflake Summit assumes a company has done that consolidation first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Snowflake Summit took place in San Francisco last week, and the company called it its biggest yet, with around 20,000 customers and 200 partners on site across 500 sessions. Snowflake has worked in Canada since 2022, with around 250 staff and a Toronto engineering hub, one of five it runs globally.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Digital Journal<\/em> sat down with Shannon Katschilo, the company\u2019s country manager for Canada, at Summit for her read on which of the announcements matter most for companies in Canada.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-agents-put-data-work-in-non-technical-hands\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Agents put data work in non-technical hands<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Snowflake describes an agentic enterprise as four parts working together: the data, a choice of AI models, the business applications, and a control plane to coordinate them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agents, CoCo and CoWork, are the parts most people across a company interact with. Both let staff work with company data without writing code.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CoCo is for building, where someone describes a tool or a migration in plain language and the agent produces it. CoWork is for asking, where a business user poses a question to the data and acts on the results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agents reach the people who need answers from company data but have always had to wait on someone else to pull them. When I asked which announcement companies in Canada would be most excited by, Katschilo named CoWork. She runs it daily with her team across Canada and brings a live demonstration into nearly every customer conversation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can see it in front of your eyes, like the magic that happens with CoWork,\u201d said Katschilo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CoWork connects to Google Drive, Salesforce, and Slack, so a business user can ask a question grounded in company data and have the agent draft an email, update a ticket, or post a message without leaving the tools they already use.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Snowflake had already moved to extend that connector model days earlier, with an intent to acquire Natoma, an enterprise platform for identity-aware authorization. Inside the platform, customers can run models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Meta, Mistral, or DeepSeek.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CoCo addresses a problem Katschilo often hears from companies in Canada, that they can\u2019t hire technical talent fast enough to clear the work in front of them. Building in plain language makes that work accessible to people who aren\u2019t engineers, and one payoff she cites is migration speed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMigrations would be months long,\u201d said Katschilo. \u201cWe\u2019re now seeing that being done within weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, Katschilo\u2019s point about speed comes with a caveat. Agents can help teams move faster, but doing so requires organizations to first organize their data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was the broader lesson from Caitlin Halferty, head of data and analytics at Thomson Reuters, who told the Summit audience that Snowflake gave the company the governed, curated data on which foundation its AI products are built. Photo courtesy of Snowflake<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"h-open-data-still-comes-with-switching-costs\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Open data still comes with switching costs<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lock-in is a concern we\u2019ve reported on before with platforms this central to how a company runs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Snowflake Summit, CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy told the press ahead of his keynote that customers aren\u2019t tied to a single AI model. They can run LLMs from different providers within the platform and switch between them, much like a Snowflake deployment can shift from AWS to Azure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI tell our customers, we offer you cloud independence,\u201d said Ramaswamy. \u201cWe approach the model providers in a similar way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When open-source models improve, he said, the company can pass lower costs to customers quickly, whereas a vendor built on its own closed models cannot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Snowflake stores its data in Apache Iceberg, an open format any tool can read, so a company\u2019s information isn\u2019t locked inside a system only Snowflake can open. For a technology leader who has been burned by a proprietary format before, that openness matters, because it means the data can leave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The data is only part of the story.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any company using a platform builds rules and pipelines around its data to make it usable, and that work is what Horizon Catalog, Snowflake\u2019s governance product, helps manage, applying one set of access policies across every tool that touches the data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of that moves with the files. Switching platforms is never free, on Snowflake or anywhere else, because the work built around the data always has to be rebuilt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What the open format changes is whether moving is possible at all. With the data in an open standard, it can come along when a company goes.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-opportunity-is-real-for-companies-that-do-the-work-first\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The opportunity is real for companies that do the work first<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canadian companies have turned a corner over the past year, Katschilo said, from talking about AI to using it, and the ones doing it well had already done the work of getting their data in order.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is no AI strategy without a data strategy,\u201d said Katschilo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building that foundation, pulling data out of scattered systems into one place a company can trust, is the work facing many Canadian organizations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only 12% of Canadian companies used AI to produce goods or services in the year to mid-2025, a figure the federal government wants to reach 60% by 2034.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That target comes from \u201cAI for All,\u201d the national AI strategy Ottawa released the same week as Snowflake Summit. As <em>Digital Journal<\/em> reported, the strategy is ambitious about what Canada should build, but less clear about who is responsible for making it real inside organizations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Snowflake\u2019s announcements point to the same reality facing Canadian organizations: AI agents can make data easier to use, but they cannot do the organizational work for you.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-final-shots\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final shots<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>AI agents are giving more employees direct access to company data, instead of forcing every question through a technical team.<\/li>\n<li>Models switch freely inside Snowflake, and the open data format means a company can leave, even if the work built around the data has to be rebuilt.<\/li>\n<li>Agents only work on a data foundation that a company has already built. Many organizations still have that work to do before they see the full value.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Disclosure: Snowflake covered my travel and accommodation to attend Snowflake Summit.
