Everyone is going to be getting some some experience with it,\u201d said Fuller, the executive director of New York Behavioral Health<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnytime we\u2019re with this excited, physiologically our, nervous systems are going to be wound up. We\u2019re gonna have lots of energy, our fight or flight system actually is taking off. And so we\u2019ve got all this energy and our muscles want to move and we\u2019re social creatures.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>According to Fuller, the \u201ccollective mental health impact\u201d is being boosted purely because of how long it has been since the Knicks had a chance at clinching an NBA title. The team\u2019s last Finals appearance was in 1999 \u2014 and the boys haven\u2019t brought home a championship was 1973.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201canticipatory anxiety\u201d is at an all-time high, and much more intense than if Knicks fans were more accustomed to the witnessing their team make it through the playoffs, he explained.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cAnxiety and excitement look very, very similar,\u201d said Dr. Ryan Fuller. <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cPeople are anxious about the game because they\u2019re afraid we\u2019re going to lose, but they\u2019re also excited. And if you look physiologically, anxiety and excitement look very, very similar,\u201d Fuller said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re really, really, really excited and you\u2019re being bombarded with dopamine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A symptom of these bursts of brain hormones is the wild behavior by fans whether the Knicks win or lose, he explains. <\/p>\n<p>Huge brawls broke out after the Knicks won the first two series games last week as well as following their Game 3 loss Monday.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cWithout question, moods are contagious and this is in the air,\u201d said Fuller. <span class=\"credit\">AP Photo\/Ryan Murphy<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOne thing that I think people don\u2019t realize sometimes is really, really positive moods sometimes lead to really poor judgment,\u201d Fuller said. \u201cIf someone is in a manic episode, they\u2019re likely to take risks with their bank accounts on businesses that might not make sense or gamble. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then if we\u2019ve got a group of people around us cheering us on, suddenly the rules may not be as important as connecting and pleasing those around us \u2026 The judgment is just impaired when people are so emotionally overwhelmed, even when it\u2019s overwhelmed by a positive emotion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The most serious, die-hard fans are getting hit the hardest by the collective mania because they have tied their own identity to the team. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s almost not just that [the Knicks] is a loser, but almost like you\u2019re a loser,\u201d said Fuller, adding that a tournament loss might feel like to some as if a loved one died.<\/p>\n<p>The intense anxiety is spilling on to others \u2014 even those who might be a fan for the moment or those who are simply friends with fans. <\/p>\n<p>The mania is also being amplified because of the still-lingering effects of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Although it\u2019s been years since the shutdown, New Yorkers are still starved of the in-person interaction from the era before the shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>The monoculture moment \u2014 and the watch parties popping up across the five boroughs \u2014 are presenting the rare opportunity to connect, setting the stage for \u201cjoy and excitement really overrunning people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even those watching from home aren\u2019t safe from the mania, Fuller warns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got all this energy and our muscles want to move and we\u2019re social creatures. So we want to engage \u2014 and that means even talking to myself or the television,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>While hopes are still high, Fuller warns fans not to put too much stock in the team in case it all goes wrong.<\/p>\n<p>His clinical advice is to either grieve or celebrate appropriately, but remember that a championship title does not mean life or death.<\/p>\n<p>When asked if New Yorkers will need more therapy after this historic moment, Fuller said: I certainly hope not.
