You\u2019ve got the academy to pay for, then just living costs in general. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018So I\u2019ve probably lost a good chunk last year, but luckily enough I\u2019m in a decent position where I was earning good money before I turned professional.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Not many snooker players give up a more lucrative job to take on the best on the baize, but Quinn explains that is exactly what he has done.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Fergal-Quinn-3-10bc.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28710894\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Quinn hails from Coalisland, the home town of Dennis Taylor (Picture: WST)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018I was a professional gambler,\u2019 he said. \u2018I was advising on American horse racing. I\u2019ve never worked a day in my life! <\/p>\n<p>\u2018I would be making a lot more money if I wasn\u2019t on the tour, but I wanted to give myself a chance. Just try and focus on it and we\u2019ll see. I don\u2019t want to have any regrets. I just want to focus on snooker for now while the opportunities are there and give myself the best chance.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Quinn was specifically involved in horse racing in the US, which meant an unusual lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018In my previous job I could have gone to sleep at 4am, woke up at 1-2pm and worked straight through to 4am again,\u2019 he said. \u2018It was mentally draining and it was very time consuming.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Talking Snooker Episode 255: The Big Return\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/episode\/3smFtoRuKvxpy6nNlSWCGi?utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u2018I had good joy from it when I was younger. It\u2019s a lot harder now to be a professional gambler. A lot harder. They restrict you, limit your accounts, and make it almost impossible.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>With that career behind him and pursuing success on the snooker table, it is a very different way of life and work.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018With the horse racing, I was used to doing my thing and within 30 minutes to an hour, I would know I\u2019ve got the right horse. I know I\u2019ve got loads of value and let\u2019s see what happens,\u2019 he explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018With snooker, you put months and years worth of hard work in and you don\u2019t see the results until further down the line. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"430\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Fergal-Quinn2-d6ba.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28710868\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Quinn is confident of improved results this season (Picture: WST)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018So for my brain, it\u2019s very different to what I\u2019m used to. From that high adrenaline stuff to snooker, which is a lot more of a craft.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Quinn\u2019s first season as a pro has been a challenge, but he feels he has honed his craft and is ready to progress with experience under his belt.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Obviously it\u2019s tough,\u2019 he said. \u2018You\u2019re diving in at the deep end, competing against the best players in the world, but I feel like I\u2019ve learned a lot. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019ve learned just how much hard work it takes to feel at your best. Mentally, you take a lot of hits, don\u2019t you? You take a lot of slaps and you have to just keep coming back for more and keep practicing through it all, regardless of how you feel. There\u2019s a bigger picture and there\u2019s huge opportunities, so you have to just keep going.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I plan to have a couple of people in my corner this season, I\u2019m trying a couple of new things and just hopefully I can show my talents and let myself play because there is a lot of pressure on the tour. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s very restricting, everyone\u2019s trying their hardest, but sometimes you have to let the shackles off and let go. You have to take the fear of missing out and let whatever happens, happen.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Quinn knows it is a scrap for snooker survival this year, but he is coming at it with a positive attitude and is ready for the fight.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It is tough as a low-ranked player, but look, there\u2019s a huge opportunity there and it\u2019s the same for everyone else,\u2019 he said. \u2018It\u2019s down to yourself to make it. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018The first season was a huge learning experience. There were a few narrow defeats and matches that could easily have gone the other way, but overall I\u2019ve taken a lot from it and I feel like I\u2019ve gained a lot of belief that I can compete at this level.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The playing conditions are perfect and it\u2019s up to me to put the hard work in, get stuck in, win a couple of games, and then I\u2019ll get rewarded and go up the rankings.
