height: 750px; background: #ccc; display: grid; place-items: center;\">\r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e2\" data-zoneid=\"5876678\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  \r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e6\" data-zoneid=\"5876682\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Karen Bass touted her lead and took aim at rival Nithya Raman in a campaign statement posted last Sunday as the lefty councilwoman overtook former reality TV star Spencer Pratt for second place in the mayor\u2019s race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look forward to winning a contest against an opponent who allows encampments near schools and fights against hiring more cops, yet is MIA on saving Hollywood jobs and fighting back when ICE invades LA,\u201d Alex Stack, a Bass campaign spokesperson, said in a statement referring to Raman, who voted against banning encampments near schools and opposed hiring more LAPD officers.<\/p>\n<p>Bass\u2019s statement came Sunday evening as Raman gained a slight lead, with 27.12% of the vote, unseating Pratt from second place.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Incumbent Mayor Karen Bass touted her lead and took aim at Nithya Raman in a campaign statement posted Sunday. <span class=\"credit\">AP Photo\/William Liang<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pratt now stands at 26.69% as more mail ballots \u2014 which tend to favor Democrats \u2014 remain to be counted, with 83% of the total vote reported.<\/p>\n<p>While Bass already advanced to the November runoff, the race for second place remains unsettled, though political observers say Raman is likely to maintain her lead. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Under the Los Angeles Municipal Code, if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, the top two vote-getters advance to the November ballot.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Strategists say Bass likely would have preferred to face Spencer Pratt rather than Raman in a runoff election. <span class=\"credit\">Pedro Colo for CA Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Bass campaign, despite the race not yet being officially called in Raman\u2019s favor, doubled down on its attacks against the Democratic Socialists of America-backed councilwoman and treated her as the likely challenger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNithya Raman repeatedly votes to allow homeless encampments next to schools, day cares, senior centers and other sensitive areas. When asked about it, she has said, \u2018I don\u2019t think a kid\u2019s going to be safer because a tent is 500 feet away from a school, you know, it\u2019s like, whatever,&#8217;\u201d the campaign said.<\/p>\n<p>The statement then shifted from criticism of Raman to a list of accomplishments credited to Bass, pointing to declining homelessness and crime rates, increased police hiring, new housing construction, major streetlight repairs and the city\u2019s first comprehensive infrastructure plan as evidence of the mayor\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n<p>While the Bass campaign highlighted her sizable lead and \u201clongstanding\u201d record, strategists say Bass likely would have preferred to face Pratt rather than Raman in a runoff, viewing him as an easier opponent.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Despite the race not yet being called, Bass\u2019s camp doubled down on attacks against DSA-backed councilwoman Raman. <span class=\"credit\">Jonathan Alcorn for CA Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt would have been easier for Karen Bass to sail into reelection, but it would have been in a campaign that wouldn\u2019t have been as constructive or useful \u2014 a campaign about ideas, legitimate realistic policies and what the city needs to do going forward,\u201d Democratic pollster Paul Mitchell told The California Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to have a center-left versus more progressive-left election \u2014 DSA versus establishment Democrat. That will not be as easy for Karen Bass, but it might be healthier for the city,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Republican strategist Mike Madrid agreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s been trying to elevate Pratt. That\u2019s the best way that she can survive. Does Pratt making the runoff benefit him?
