height: 750px; background: #ccc; display: grid; place-items: center;\">\r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e2\" data-zoneid=\"5876678\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  \r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e6\" data-zoneid=\"5876682\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-right:0;padding-left:0\">\n<p>Hundreds of young Chinese students clutching pens and their IDs shuffled into a testing centre in blue-skied Beijing on Sunday, swarmed by parents, joining millions sitting for the national high-stakes university entrance exam.<\/p>\n<p>Around 12.9 million students nationwide registered for this year\u2019s \u201cgaokao\u201d, according to the Ministry of Education, which for most is the sole determining factor in admission to a Chinese university.<\/p>\n<p>The multi-day exam, which began Sunday, drills test-takers on subjects including Chinese, mathematics, English, science and the humanities \u2014 with the tallied scores to be released later this month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s my first time, so I\u2019m a bit anxious,\u201d said student Zhang Xinnan moments before entering the exam hall.<\/p>\n<p>The spectacled Beijinger admitted he was nervous for the essay portion of the Chinese test, as he said he thought the prompts had become harder to respond to.<\/p>\n<p>But, wearing his school uniform, the 18-year-old told AFP that despite the jitters he thought he would do well, having spent the last year drilling practice questions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe things we needed to master have been mastered,\u201d said Zhang, who hopes to work with new energy vehicles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust go in with self-confidence; you\u2019ll be solid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some mothers and fathers clustered outside the exam halls dressed in red, a symbol of good fortune in Chinese culture.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of police and security guards milled about as parents stood beside the line of students waiting to enter the exam hall, hoping to film their children walking inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Shifting attitudes \u2013<\/p>\n<p>High-level education has expanded rapidly in China in recent decades as an economic boom pushed up living standards \u2014 as well as parental expectations for their children\u2019s careers.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the job market that fresh graduates enter is no longer as rosy as it once was, with high youth unemployment a significant concern.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly one in six Chinese between the ages of 16 and 24, excluding students, are jobless, according to official data.<\/p>\n<p>Attitudes toward the test are changing, with students and parents more and more unwilling to trade physical and mental health for high test scores.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pretty free range,\u201d said mother Deng Ju, standing across from the exam hall holding a stack of practice books for her daughter, revising last minute with her friend nearby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust perform normally; that\u2019s enough,\u201d said Deng, 53. \u201cI care more about physical health; the test is just a formality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Deng, whose daughter isn\u2019t aiming for a \u201cname school\u201d such as the elite Tsinghua or Peking University in the capital, doing away with the gaokao would be ideal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo more gaokao. Let\u2019s not gaokao anymore,\u201d she told AFP. \u201cBut\u00a0that\u2019s impossible,\u201d she said, smiling.<\/p>\n<p>For many Beijing students, the gaokao was still a step toward achieving their dream.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope I can go to my ideal university,\u201d said student Zhang.<\/p>\n<p>His friends also cared about the exam, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut if we can calm down, we should be able to get to a stable mentality,\u201d said Zhang.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMentality is the most important when it comes to the gaokao.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
