A referral marketing strategy can help businesses navigate long-term growth. But financial advisor and author Dave Van Buskirk says don\u2019t ask. He argues that direct referral requests are not always the primary factor behind long-term business growth. After two decades of helping people with big life decisions, he says business growth can also come from building relationships that lead to referrals over time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His book, Referable: How to Get Unlimited Introductions without Even Asking, breaks down his strategy for getting referrals without asking. He doesn\u2019t focus on mining for names but on developing a client experience strategy that consistently gives every new person who walks in the door what he calls a \u201cpositive client experience,\u201d one that includes client touchpoints and consistent communication practices. The book discusses relationship-building and client experience as factors that may contribute to repeat business and referrals over time.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-relationship-focused-business-approach\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relationship-focused business approach<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Van Buskirk\u2019s relationship-based business growth is the result of his life experiences. His values go back to his childhood, where his grandmother taught him about long-term thinking through stock ownership. Her early lessons stuck with him: He says investing, like relationships, benefits from being built on trust and consistency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His practice emphasizes a relationship-focused approach to client interactions. He describes his approach as focusing on professionalism, consistency, and attentiveness. And that generosity isn\u2019t just about money. It\u2019s also about being generous with time, patience, effort, and applying wisdom to every situation. \u201cIt\u2019s about being present and attentive with clients,\u201d Van Buskirk explains. He feels that by being intentional with your time, using good communication skills, and showing appreciation to those you serve, clients may respond positively to consistent communication and attention.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-on-empathy-and-life-experience\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">On empathy and life experience<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A large part of Van Buskirk\u2019s work is simply being consistent. He believes the initial client experience on day one needs to extend to every day that follows. He says this type of consistency can help support ongoing professional relationships. He also says personal experiences, including the loss of a parent and health challenges within his family, have influenced the way he approaches conversations with clients. As a result, he knows that most financial decisions are never just about the numbers, but connected to broader personal circumstances rather than numbers alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Van Buskirk says that referrals from existing clients are among the aspects of his work that he values. He has also been recognized as a Best-in-State Wealth Advisor by Forbes and SHOOK Research.
