Because we went to sleep. We didn\u2019t care. We didn\u2019t vote. We didn\u2019t really listen,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, I didn\u2019t vote for this guy, but I didn\u2019t do enough work to skillfully convince people around me, close to me, not close to me, that this was insane to elect this person as President of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went on to call President Trump a \u201cmaniac,\u201d who has \u201cdismantled almost everything that was good about the US government and the US people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He admits that while the country \u201chas never been a perfect place,\u201d it has always been able to be \u201cself-corrective.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Richard Gere speaking at the\u00a0Oslo Freedom Forum\u00a0in Norway, June 2, 2026. <span class=\"credit\">YouTube\/AFP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Later in his monologue, Gere reflected on his recent visit to the concentration camp Dachau, using it as a warning for \u201chow quickly our world can be taken from us if we fall asleep,\u201d urging everyone to \u201csee the cues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t sit back and go, \u2018Ah, life is good. I\u2019m fine. You know, I\u2019ve got food. I got money. Blah blah blah. I got my house. I got another car. I\u2019m thinking about this. I\u2019m OK. I know he\u2019s a bad guy, but it\u2019s OK,&#8217;\u201d Gere said. \u201cBut it\u2019s not OK. It\u2019s not OK. It\u2019s never OK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to see the cues, this dictatorship of the monsters, how quickly it happens,\u201d he added. \u201cWe have to be vigilant.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>President Trump attends an event at Custer Farms in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, June, 5, 2026. <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The \u201cPretty Woman\u201d actor previously spoke to Variety in December 2025, after\u00a0hearing the Dalai Lama, who he called a close friend, speak.<\/p>\n<p>He told\u00a0Variety\u00a0that the experience made him think about how the United States was on the \u201cvery wrong track,\u201d adding he doesn\u2019t know how anyone could explain what President Trump \u201chas done to this country\u201d or \u201cwhat it feels like to be an American now,\u201d calling it \u201castonishing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we want a world a certain way, then we have to elect leaders who have a similar vision to us and will lead us towards this higher level of possibility \u2014 who we are as individuals and how we can create a world, a society where people can live with each other rather than this battlefield every day, all day long, with the craziness,\u201d Gere said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially, as I say, coming from this very crude mentality that is now in our leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Richard Gere and wife Alejandra Silva attend the premiere of \u201cWe Feed People\u201d on May 3, 2022, in New York City. <span class=\"credit\">Evan Agostini\/Invision\/AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Gere and his wife, Alejandra Silva,\u00a0moved to Spain at the end of 2024, with the actor telling Vanity Fair Spain that he thought of the move as \u201ca great adventure\u201d because he had never lived outside the United States.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that the move was good for his wife, because \u201cher family, her lifelong friends and her culture\u201d are there, and it was a good trade-off since \u201cshe was very generous in giving me six years living in my world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When speaking with the Daily Mail in April 2025, Silva explained that the\u00a0move is not permanent, noting \u201cFor a few years [we\u2019ll live in Spain], and then come back. But we\u2019re always coming back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m with my family\u2026 I missed them a lot. But I miss the US.
