The number of assaults, robberies, and rapes on MARTA\u2019s trains is MORE THAN THREE TIMES the national average,\u201d Duffy wrote in a Thursday X post.<\/p>\n<p>The probe follows the murder of 66-year-old Margaret Swan, a great-grandmother, who was repeatedly stabbed to death on an Atlanta train allegedly by a homeless man.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret\u2019s family DESERVES ACCOUNTABILITY. Eight seconds later, at 11:25:26 a.m., he allegedly reached into his right front pants pocket, pulled out a knife and opened it, the affidavit states.<\/p>\n<p>At 11:25:32 a.m., Matthews allegedly sliced Swan\u2019s throat with his right hand while holding her head, according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>John Elijah Matthews lies on the ground as police detain him after the brutal stabbing on May 30, 2026. <span class=\"credit\">Instagram\/@lifeaspariss__<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Swan screamed and tried to get up from her seat, but Matthews allegedly held onto her right arm and\u00a0stabbed her approximately 18 to 20 times, the affidavit says.<\/p>\n<p>Federal prosecutors\u00a0said surveillance video showed Matthews stabbing Swan approximately 18 to 20 times in the chest and neck area as she tried to defend herself.<\/p>\n<p>Other passengers fled and called for help, and at least one passenger confirmed Swan had\u00a0no interaction with Matthews before\u00a0the attack, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>The affidavit says Matthews then threw Swan to the floor and stood near her until the train arrived at Oakland City Station at 11:27:05 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>He then allegedly exited the train with the knife in his right hand and walked toward the north end of the platform.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Swan screamed and tried to get up from her seat, but Matthews allegedly held onto her right arm and stabbed her approximately 18 to 20 times, the affidavit says. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Shanae Sams<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Federal prosecutors said surveillance video showed Matthews stabbing Swan approximately 18 to 20 times in the chest and neck area as she tried to defend herself. <span class=\"credit\">Instagram\/@lifeaspariss__<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MARTA\u00a0police officers\u00a0arrived moments later and rushed to apprehend him, according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n<p>Bolton, who was patrolling the Oakland City Station concourse, heard a commotion on the platform and saw patrons pointing toward Matthews, according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n<p>Bolton allegedly saw Matthews holding a knife near the north end of the platform and ordered him to turn over.\\<\/p>\n<p>Matthews allegedly did not comply and was taken into custody after another officer arrived, the affidavit says.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said Matthews was allegedly found with a bloody folding knife and had blood on his clothes.<\/p>\n<p>The affidavit says that Matthews \u201cdid not have an address currently\u201d and that he advised he did not have a phone number currently.<\/p>\n<p>First responders attempted\u00a0emergency medical aid, but Swan was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>The affidavit says the Fulton County Medical Examiner arrived at the scene at 1:45 p.m. and recorded Swan\u2019s time of death as 2 p.m.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
