The neglect charge was dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the end, we chose the certain outcome of a negotiated plea over the uncertainty outcome of a jury trial,\u201d Alan Ostergren, the Muscatine County Attorney at the time, said.<\/p>\n<p>McFarland\u2019s childcare license was revoked \u2013 and it emerged that he had never declared his past offenses on his application record.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Johnathan McFarland, Ryan\u2019s surviving son, speaking at a vigil on Tuesday. <span class=\"credit\">WQAD News 8 \/ YouTube<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>McFarland was convicted of armed robbery in Illinois in 1994 and was sentenced to seven years in prison, WQAD reported.<\/p>\n<p>In 1997, he also pled guilty to a theft charge and was slapped with an eight-year sentence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McFarland was also convicted of fraud in 2019 after being busted for tinkering with the odometers of cars before selling them.<\/p>\n<p>He tried to convey that the vehicles had a lower mileage than what they had recorded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Investigators are still probing the motive behind McFarland\u2019s rampage \u2013 but say the shootings \u201cstemmed from a domestic dispute.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A map showing the locations where McFarland\u2019s victims were found.  <span class=\"credit\">Anadolu via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He also killed Ryle McFarland, 20, Mark McFarland, 16, and Ryan McFarland Jr, 13, cops announced \u2013 and they previously described the spree as an \u201cact of evil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dakota Whitlow, 32, and Austin Harris, 29, were also killed in the rampage that saw bodies found in three locations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Four people were found dead in McFarland\u2019s home of more than 20 years \u2013 before he was found dead with a gunshot wound on a trail.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McFarland shouted about money outside his home just 10 minutes before the shootings, his neighbor Melissa Weggen\u00a0told the Quad-City Times.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe title=\"Victims of Muscatine shootings remembered at vigil\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZzDyomDJliQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI heard him walk by my house, saying, \u2018Don\u2019t worry about money. Everything goes away when you die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One man was found inside another home, and another was discovered in the Willits Metalworks business.<\/p>\n<p>Whitlow\u2019s fianc\u00e9e Audrey Perdue spoke at a vigil Tuesday, telling mourners he was a talented metal worker and like the other victims has talents and potential they were unable to fulfill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy heart is broken as I grieve for the loss of my fianc\u00e9 and the life that we had planned together,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy heart breaks for everyone left behind to grieve these immeasurable losses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to even think that this is even real.
