height: 750px; background: #ccc; display: grid; place-items: center;\">\r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e2\" data-zoneid=\"5876678\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  \r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e6\" data-zoneid=\"5876682\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-right:0;padding-left:0\">\n<p>Rising fuel prices triggered by the Middle East war are driving a sharp increase in carpooling, with a ride-sharing platform reporting a surge in new users seeking cheaper ways to travel.<\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s largest carpooling platform BlaBlaCar said soaring energy costs have pushed 600,000 additional drivers onto the app this year \u2014 20 percent more than initially projected \u2014 as commuters look to offset the rising cost of fuel.<\/p>\n<p>In India, its single biggest market with more than 20 million users in 2025, the number of passengers has increased by 40 percent\u00a0since the start of the US-Israeli airstrikes against Iran on February 28.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the global carpooling leader posted record-breaking figures in the world\u2019s most populous country India \u2014 outpacing Brazil with 19 million users and France with seven million, according to Benjamin Retourne, the platform\u2019s product director.<\/p>\n<p>This trend has been more pronounced in countries where fuel price increases driven by the war have been sudden and significant, combined with limited government support, such as in France.<\/p>\n<p>The platform works by connecting drivers and passengers willing to travel together between cities to share costs, with the app in most of its 21 operating nations taking a 20 percent commission.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Saves fuel \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier in May urged the country\u2019s 1.4 billion citizens to save fuel by making greater use of carpooling and public transport.<\/p>\n<p>India imports approximately half of its crude oil via the Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran effectively closed in retaliation to US-Israeli strikes launched in February.<\/p>\n<p>Retourne said a decade ago, when BlaBlaCar first launched in India, even \u201cafter two or three years, it just wasn\u2019t catching on\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The company, founded in France in 2006, therefore stopped investing in the world\u2019s fastest growing economy but kept its application running from its Paris headquarters, unlike many large foreign groups that outsourced their services to India.<\/p>\n<p>Growth finally began to pick up after the Covid-19 pandemic, driven by the country\u2019s economic and digital acceleration, as well as word of mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Retourne pointed to a growth in private car ownership as well as rapid urbanisation, with 200 million additional city dwellers over the past decade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are very connected,\u201d he said, adding that \u201ctoday, wherever you go, there is 5G\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>That proved to be the \u201crecipe for carpooling to take off\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But he was surprised that a driving factor was not the cost \u2014 but rather to avoid often crowded buses or trains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number one reason people choose carpooling is not price, but comfort\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The market potential remains vast, with \u201ca new segment of the population\u201d eager to travel for leisure and visit friends and family.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2018Saves time\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Assistant bank manager Pratyush Anuraj, 24, from India\u2019s financial capital Mumbai, said he used the carpooling platform to travel to his family\u2019s home in Pune every weekend \u2014 a 150 kilometre (93 mile) journey of around 2.5 hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s cheaper than the train, the bus, or a private taxi,\u201d he said. \u201cIt also saves time, as there are few stops and the vehicle doesn\u2019t wait beyond the scheduled time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He does, however, point out some drawbacks: either the trip is often cancelled at the last minute, or the drivers don\u2019t answer calls.<\/p>\n<p>So far, the French platform has not monetised carpooling in India, where people pay each other directly, often using the popular digital UPI mobile telephones payment systems.<\/p>\n<p>It now wants to evolve its model.<\/p>\n<p>The next objective is to \u201cbuild a platform that aggregates multiple modes of transport\u201d \u2014 connecting cars to buses and trains.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
