Everything goes away when you die,&#8217;\u201d neighbor Melissa Weggen told the Quad-City Times of McFarland, whom she thought of as a \u201cdecent guy\u201d who would lovingly hold hands with his wife on walks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Police investigate a fatal shooting in Muscatine, Iowa. <span class=\"credit\">WQAD via AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not unusual for people to be yelling on this street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weggen estimated that \u201cabout 10 minutes\u201d later a huge wave of emergency responders arrived at the house, which property records show was the killer dad\u2019s main residence for more than 20 years.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI was watching from my porch,\u201d Weggen said of the dramatic scenes as officers yelled through loudspeakers, \u201ctelling someone inside to come out with their hands up.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Four bodies were found inside McFarland\u2019s home \u2014 but he had bolted before police arrived.<\/p>\n<p>He was found on a nearby riverview trail \u2014 where he shot himself dead while talking to officers, according to police, who called the killing spree an \u201cact of evil.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A map showing where McFarland\u2019s victims were found.  <span class=\"credit\">Anadolu via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Police realized there might be additional victims, and found a man inside a home two miles from where the four bodies were discovered.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Cops sealed off McFarland\u2019s home after responding to reports of a shooting.  <span class=\"credit\">KWQC<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A second man was found shot dead inside Willits Metalworks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, cops said it appears the \u201cshootings stemmed from a domestic dispute\u201d. At this time,\u201d \u2014 and \u201call victims are believed to be family members of the deceased suspect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The victims have not been identified \u2014 but two were confirmed to be Muscatine Community School District students, and two were school staffers.<\/p>\n<p>Weggen\u2019s daughter<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Sarah Ziegenhorn, who graduated\u00a0school alongside McFarland\u2019s daughter, said she reached out to her after cops swooped on the home in the city, which has a population of around 23,500.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have not heard back from her,\u201d the 20-year-old said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[She]\u00a0was really sweet, liked everyone, thought about everyone \u2026 she just had a big heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weggen considered McFarland a \u201cdecent guy\u201d who regularly went on walks with his wife in the neighborhood, including with their kids as well as their pet pugs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were always holding hands and they\u2019d have their youngest child with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Austin Loughead, another neighbor, said McFarland was always smiling whenever he encountered him.<\/p>\n<p>Their last encounter was Sunday when Loughead was teaching his son how to ride a bike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said from a distance, \u2018He\u2019s doing really good.
