height: 750px; background: #ccc; display: grid; place-items: center;\">\r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e2\" data-zoneid=\"5876678\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  \r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e6\" data-zoneid=\"5876682\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A top Hollywood producer is engulfed in a toxic war with far-left Los Angeles activists after they painted him as a \u201cbigoted puppet-master\u201d for opposing a controversial homeless housing project.<\/p>\n<p>Charles Rosin, who worked on 90210, Beverly Hills and Dawson\u2019s Creek, tore apart the social justice warriors for the \u201cdevastating\u201d character assassination.<\/p>\n<p>The 74-year-old has been at odds with lefties from the LA Forward group and City Council candidates ever since he launched a fight against the plans.<\/p>\n<p>Venice Community Housing, a local nonprofit, wants to build a 120-unit homeless housing block that will cost taxpayers a staggering $2.5 million per unit.<\/p>\n<p>The project, which was first floated ten years ago, has been paused after Rosin and fellow neighbors filed a lawsuit claiming it was too expensive, bad for the environment and did not go through the proper processes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Charles Rosin was served with court documents as part of the widening Venice Dell legal fight, after activists and project supporters accused opponents of the development of racial discrimination.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Faizah Malik, DSA candidate for LA City Council District 11 was part of original team of 14 attorneys filing the suit against the city.  <span class=\"credit\">Ringo Chiu<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Far-left City Council candidate Faizah Malik and Venice Community Housing sued the city two years ago for not moving forward with the idea.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit accused Mayor Karen Bass, City Attorney Heidi Feldstein Soto and Councilmember Traci Park of siding with a \u201cwell-resourced, predominantly white minority\u201d opposed to the project.<\/p>\n<p>They also recently subpoenaed Rosin for all his communications on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>In court documents, organizations fighting for the development painted him as a \u201cbigoted puppet-master,\u201d arguing that he opposed the project because it was proposed by people of color and primarily intended to serve communities of color, the documents say.<\/p>\n<p>But Rosin revealed he is taking the war back to them, ridiculing the bigotry claims and pointing out his opposition is purely based on policy and land use.<\/p>\n<p>He told the California Post: \u201cWhat makes this so devastating is unless somebody is openly using racist rhetoric or advocating racist policies, how are they supposed to prove they\u2019re not racist?\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Coalition for Safe Coastal Development says its objections to the Venice Dell project is environmental and a soaring taxpayer costs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Beverly Hills 90210 producer Charles Rosin says far-left activists weaponized racism.  <span class=\"credit\">Instagram\/@charles.rosin<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He continued: \u201cThey have put me in the position of having to spend my own resources trying to prove I\u2019m not a racist, even though there has never been anything in my life to suggest that\u2019s true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are so many examples throughout my life. But how do you prove you\u2019re not racist?\u201d Rosin said he believed his long public record would make clear the fight over Venice Dell was just about land use.<\/p>\n<p>He also said using legal avenues to silence private citizens like him set a dangerous precedence.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cWhy should anybody get involved with the tough policy issues facing us if the ultimate consequence is going to be character assassination?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI erroneously assumed that as an individual, I had the approval of participating because all I ever thought would happen is that eventually the councilman would hear what everybody in the neighborhood was after and look for compromise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week Rosin was served with court documents after becoming the figurehead for the movement against the project.<\/p>\n<p>He is one of three directors of the Coalition for Safe Coastal Development, a volunteer neighborhood group formed in 2021 to wage a legal and public fight against Venice Dell.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Executive Producers Tony Jonas and Charles Rosin at the premiere screening of \u201cLeap Years.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Bei\/Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The group said its objections focused on flooding risks, tsunami hazards, traffic, parking loss, beach access and soaring taxpayer costs.<\/p>\n<p>Rosin\u2019s attorney Christian Wrede said the racism accusation became the foundation for the aggressive subpoena campaign targeting him and the tiny volunteer-run group.<\/p>\n<p>He told The Post: \u201cTheir theory of relevance was that the coalition was sort of the core of this group of homeless-hating, white racists who somehow got the city\u2019s top brass to do their bidding and squash the project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But public records show the project is controversial among more than just the group, with Wrede pointing to the Venice Neighborhood Council\u2019s opposition and LADOT\u2019s warnings about liability concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Some prominent black Venice families also opposed having their name associated with the project, asking to have it removed. <\/p>\n<p>In January, coalition members urged the city to continue fighting the lawsuits, calling the development a \u201cboondoggle under the guise of community benefit\u201d and warning costs could hit $233 million.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The Venice Canals, ground zero for the political fight unfolding to build $2.2 million a unit homeless housing. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Malik, one of the attorneys tied to the original LA Forward lawsuits, entered the City Council race against Park in 2025, with Venice Dell becoming a central campaign issue.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cI was proud to be one of the lead attorneys on the Venice Dell case when it was filed \u2014 a fair housing lawsuit on behalf of community members and taxpayers who have been harmed by the years long obstruction of affordable housing on the Westside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot comment on recent litigation strategy as I have been ethically walled off from the case since I filed to run for office in order to protect the integrity of the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Attorney Jonathan Jager, from Public Counsel, which is representing LA Forward, added: \u201cPublic Counsel represents a nonprofit and Los Angeles residents harmed by the City\u2019s obstruction of a duly approved affordable housing project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur lawsuit is about bringing desperately needed affordable housing to one of the most expensive communities in Los Angeles \u2014 housing that will serve disabled residents and people working their way out of homelessness.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Cast portrait from the television series Beverly Hills, 90210. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSubpoenas are a standard tool in any litigation, and Mr. Rosin is a material witness. Our clients allege that City officials interfered with this project in part because a vocal group of residents, including Mr. Rosin, opposed affordable housing intended for disabled and formerly unhoused people in their neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis subpoena has nothing to do with Mr. Rosin\u2019s opinions.
