So when there are news articles about our marriage, it\u2019s just extra sh\u2014y,\u201d Gertner went on. \u201cCan I say that online? I hope I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, the Wall Street Journal broke an explosive story about Platner\u2019s extramarital sexting. It revealed that he had an active Kik account, a private messaging service that has a reputation for being used for hookups.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Platner is accused of reaching out to several women on messaging apps while married.  <span class=\"credit\">Obtained by the New York Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>His profile image showed him shirtless with a towel around his waist.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gertner acknowledged the difficulties she faced over the past three years of marriage with Platner, particularly due to an infertility battle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing married is hard; being newly married is hard; being newly married and going through infertility is hard,\u201d Gertner said. \u201cBeing newly married going through infertility and a Senate campaign is hard. I don\u2019t even know if I have the right words to describe what we\u2019ve been going through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also decried the betrayal she felt over a former campaign aide exposing Platner\u2019s dark secrets to the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI confided deeply personal details about my marriage to someone I considered a friend,\u201d she lamented. \u201cIn the months since, I have had to watch as she spread malicious gossip to anyone who would take her call.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cI admire the f\u2014 out of him,\u201d Amy said in the wake of Platner\u2019s sexting backlash. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI trusted this person with the most private chapter of our lives \u2013 the early days of our marriage before any campaign was on our mind \u2013 and I am deeply hurt by her betrayal and the invasion of our privacy,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know who Graham is. I know the man I married and the husband he has been to me on the best and the worst days of my life. That hasn\u2019t changed, and it won\u2019t.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Last year, it\u00a0emerged that Platner was featured\u00a0on the \u201cAre we Dating the Same Guy\u201d Facebook page. One woman on the forum claimed that he used to bully her on the bus as a kid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The oyster farmer has faced a steady string of scandals during his breakthrough campaign for Senate. Last year, revelations emerged that he had a tattoo\u00a0on his chest\u00a0that resembled a Totenkopf\u00a0or \u201cdeath\u2019s head\u201d\u00a0symbol used by the Nazi SS. Platner claims to have gotten that tattoo in Croatia while inebriated in 2007 and denied knowing its Nazi\u00a0links.<\/p>\n<p>He inked over it with a \u201cCeltic knot with some imagery around dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Revelations about his since-scrubbed Reddit account postings have also haunted him.<\/p>\n<p>This includes\u00a0posts and comments about graffiti of men\u2019s genitalia\u00a0he had seen during his world travels, defending soldiers\u00a0urinating on dead Taliban soldiers, arguing that white Americans \u201cactually are\u201d racist and stupid, and calling war \u201cthe most enjoyable experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, he was in hot water for\u00a0mocking a Purple Heart soldier\u00a0who captured wild helmet footage of himself moving into the open to steer Taliban fire away from his fellow soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis video never gets old. Dumb mother\u2014er didn\u2019t deserve to live. At least his stupidity and fat ass wheezing are available for all future infantrymen to witness and hold in contempt,\u201d Platner posted on Reddit, years after the footage went viral.<\/p>\n<p>Platner is now the presumptive Democratic nominee in Maine\u2019s Senate race, ahead of the June 9 primary.<\/p>\n<p>The Marine veteran has a 7.8 percentage point polling edge over Collins,\u00a0according to the latest RealClearPolitics\u00a0aggregate of polls.
