height: 750px; background: #ccc; display: grid; place-items: center;\">\r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e2\" data-zoneid=\"5876678\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  \r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e6\" data-zoneid=\"5876682\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A South Carolina man suspected of slaying a beloved Hudson Valley hospital worker killed himself just days after police confronted him about the 25-year-old cold case.<\/p>\n<p>Alleged killer Robert Young was linked to the stabbing death of 32-year-old Nancy Smith thanks to a single strand of hair inside her New Windsor home, where she was found dead in December 2001, according to police.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators tracked down 1,000 leads, interviewed numerous people and conducted forensic reviews over more than two decades, but only cracked the case due to \u201cincredible\u201d advancements in DNA technology, New Windsor Chief Daniel Valeri said Friday.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Nancy Smith \u2014 allegedly killed by Robert Young in 2001 \u2014 was a beloved aunt and hospital worker. <span class=\"credit\">FBI<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Smith, who was remembered as a doting aunt with a warm smile, was discovered by her parents on Dec. 5, 2001 after she didn\u2019t report to work at Horton Hospital in Middletown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile I remember my sister with her beautiful smile, my parents\u2019 last image of their child was covered in blankets, dead on her living room floor,\u201d Smith\u2019s sister Barbara Stolfe said during a press conference Thursday, according to CBS 2.<\/p>\n<p>The probe stalled until 2023 when improved DNA technology encouraged detectives to submit previously collected evidence for further testing, according to New Windsor police.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The analysis led local police and FBI agents to Myrtle Beach, where they lawfully scooped up a DNA sample of someone possibly linked to the case, authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>Young\u2019s DNA was obtained across state lines and the evidence \u2014 a strand of hair collected at the crime scene \u2014 was a match, Valeri said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s incredible,\u201d he said in an interview. \u201cI\u2019m sure that the investigators at the time never thought that it would have come to that single strand of hair, but as the DNA technology advanced over the years that\u2019s exactly what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Young was interviewed in April 2026 by local police, New York State Police and the FBI, but insisted he wasn\u2019t involved, police said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Smith\u2019s sister Barbara Stolfe spoke at a press conference Thursday.  <span class=\"credit\">WABC<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Investigators returned to New York and started working with prosecutors to map out next steps, but was told by South Caroline authorities shortly after the interview that Young died by suicide, law enforcement said.<\/p>\n<p>It remains unclear what the motive behind the fatal stabbing was, but police officials said they were confident the evidence shows Young was behind the murder. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s believed the suspect and victim met at a music venue in Poughkeepsie, according to the Times-Union. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe never stopped pursuing evidence in this case, following leads and utilizing advancements in forensic technology in an effort to advance this investigation and provide long-awaited answers for Nancy and her family,\u201d Chief Valeri said in a statement.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Smith\u2019s murder happened inside of her New Windsor home. <span class=\"credit\">WABC<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Smith was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy and earned a degree from SUNY Oneonta and MPA from Marist College, according to a memorial page.<\/p>\n<p>She worked in Horton Hospital\u2019s managed care office before her death.<\/p>\n<p>The only surviving member of Smith\u2019s immediate family is her sister, Stolfe, after their parents died in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople say there\u2019s closure. In a piece of it, there\u2019s closure,\u201d Stolfe said, according to ABC 7. \u201cThere\u2019s relief and there\u2019s a little bit of peace,.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith\u2019s 2-year-old nephew always asked where his aunt was following her violent death. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019d go to my mom\u2019s house. [He\u2019d ask,] \u2018Why isn\u2019t Naynay here? She doesn\u2019t love us anymore?&#8217;\u201d Stolfe said, according to CBS 2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you tell a 2-year-old?
