height: 750px; background: #ccc; display: grid; place-items: center;\">\r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e2\" data-zoneid=\"5876678\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  \r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e6\" data-zoneid=\"5876682\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A Michigan husband was killed while his wife suffered \u201ccatastrophic injuries\u201d after an explosion leveled their suburban home \u2013 and cops now believe the blast was part of a murder-suicide plot.<\/p>\n<p>Doug Preston, 62, died and his wife of almost 40 years, Lucy, 61, was pulled from the rubble in the blast that leveled the couple\u2019s Plainfield Township, Mich., home at around 4 a.m. Tuesday, WZZM reported.<\/p>\n<p>The cause of the blast is still being investigated. <\/p>\n<p>Alpine Township Fire Chief Jeremy Kelly suggested a natural gas leak may have contributed to the fatal explosion, but Kent County undersheriff Bryan Muir outlined the apparent ill intention. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is believed to be a domestic-related situation \u2026 and that the fire was intentionally set, we believe by the husband at this point, intending to be a murder-suicide,\u201d Muir told reporters Tuesday.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Lucy Preston was left with \u2018catastrophic injuries\u2019 after her Michigan home exploded. <span class=\"credit\">Gofundme<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Investigators obtained text messages, which they say support their theory without revealing any further details.<\/p>\n<p>Lucy had filed for divorce from Doug in March, according to court documents obtained by WOOD, after Doug had previously complained about his wife\u2019s supposed \u201cexcessive spending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lucy, a beloved figure in the town\u2019s Polish community, and her electrician husband Doug were supposed to appear in court Friday for a hearing and would\u2019ve celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The couple was tied into a mutual restraining order at the time of the blast, which meant neither could damage their property, WZZM reported.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>An aerial view showing the leveled property. <span class=\"credit\">Joel Bissell\/Kalamazoo Gazette via AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They were also blocked from deleting electronic data and making major financial changes without prior approval from the court.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbors recalled how the couple\u2019s relationship was strong until just a few months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Lucy discussed her marital problems with her next-door neighbor of 30 years, Jerry Orent, WWMT reported.<\/p>\n<p>Orent was left reeling by what unfolded, as he said, \u201cNothing is worth killing yourself or killing someone else. If you have a problem, ask for help.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Investigators are seen combing the scene of the blast. <span class=\"credit\">Joel Bissell\/Kalamazoo Gazette via AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere just could have been a better way, how on earth can you think that killing yourself is going to be better than living.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no choice any longer, there is no fixing it, there is no common sense or logic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone made a decision and other people had to pay the penalty and it is down right sad.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Orent also described Doug Preston as someone who \u201cdoesn\u2019t make mistakes and who is downstairs at 3:30 in the morning.\u201d \u201cIt just doesn\u2019t fit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Several windows of Orent\u2019s home were blown out, and he admitted he felt lucky to be alive.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Lucy is a respected figure in the Polish community and was named \u2018Busia Queen\u2019 <span class=\"credit\">Gofundme<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Around 50 calls reporting the explosion were made in the immediate aftermath of the blast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a massive explosion, rumbling,\u201d neighbor Kurt Dutrizac said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw a fireball, kind of mushroom cloud, still rising from the house. And then I was able to get outside probably within a minute after that and at that point I saw that the house was on fire, kind of the backyard was on fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was debris strewn about and there were some screams, shouting.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> <span class=\"credit\">Joel Bissell\/Kalamazoo Gazette via AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Brave neighbors charged over to the scene, which was rubble, and tried to save Lucy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tim Johnson and his 17-year-old neighbor Mandrell Bryant helped pull Lucy out of the wreckage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to get in there and get her out,\u201d Johnson, who rushed to the scene wearing his socks, told WOOD. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Bryant and I] grabbed her arms and pulled her out as far as we could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bryant sprinted to the scene, despite his mom warning him against it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mom was telling me, \u2018No, you can\u2019t go, you can\u2019t go,\u2019 but I was like, \u2018Mom, I see her, she\u2019s right there, she\u2019s right there,\u201d he told WZZM.<\/p>\n<p>Bryant said Lucy\u2019s body was \u201cblown so far out that she wasn\u2019t actually inside of the house.\u201d Doug\u2019s body was recovered at around noon. She faces an \u201cunimaginably long and painful road\u201d of surgeries and rehabilitation, her friend added.<\/p>\n<p>Lucy founded the charity Busia\u2019s Boutique in 2024, which provides items to struggling families.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Lucy has been described as a \u2018caring and selfless person\u2019 by friends. <span class=\"credit\">Gofundme<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cLucy is a caring, selfless person who has always given so much to those around her. She does so much for her community and is always willing to help others however she can. So many people know and love Lucy for her kindness, generosity, and big heart,\u201d Butryn said.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2024, Lucy revealed how her husband was among those who helped turn her charitable idea into a reality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of volunteers from this hall, my husband, and a lot of vendors that helped volunteer time and money and supplies, they all loved the cause and said, \u2018Let\u2019s do it,\u2019\u201d she told WOOD.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
