Christopher Cabaldon \u2014 who\u2019s served under all five living governors \u2014 declared: \u201dIt\u2019s not really the time for celebrating legacies and building ballrooms.\u201d\u2018<\/p>\n<p>The proposal, which was tucked into his final record-setting $349.9 billion budget, means there could be money available for Democrats to honor the two-term governor once he leaves office in January.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Gov. Caroline Menjivar called the proposal \u201cabsurd\u201d during a committee meeting Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not care to recognize the legacy of governors past or present,\u201d Menjivar said during a hearing focused on health care services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI care about seniors having health insurance and seniors with disabilities having health insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Steve Hilton, the leading Republican candidate in the governor\u2019s race, was stunned to learn of Newsom\u2019s new $20 million \u201cvanity project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow out of touch can you get?\u201d Hilton said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have the highest taxes in the country because of the insane profligate spending. And now he wants to add to it with a ridiculous vanity project to put up statues to himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Newsom\u2019s office thinks $20 million is the absolute most the state\u2019s budget should allocate to honor living ex-governors. <span class=\"credit\">Anadolu via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Newsom\u2019s office initially refused to comment on the $20 million budget allocation, palming questions off to the Department of Finance, who\u2019s spokesman H.D. Lola Smallwood-Cuevas (D-Los Angeles) also questioned whether Californians would see the proposal as a priority while the state fails on other more pressing crises.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if Californians will agree that this is a priority while we can\u2019t meet the basic needs of our community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Smallwood-Cuevas also criticized the Capitol\u2019s historical portrayal of leadership, saying the state should tell a broader and more diverse story about California\u2019s political history than \u201cmore floor-to-ceiling paintings of white men.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Schwarzenegger has already received numerous honors for his time as a Hollywood star. <span class=\"credit\">Los Angeles Times via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sen. Suzette Martinez Valladares, a Republican of Santa Clarita, also ripped Newsom\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornians are stretched thin \u2014 by sky-high gas prices, housing costs, and grocery bills \u2014 and the Governor wants $20 million to celebrate living politicians?\u201d she scoffed. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly in Sacramento.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s nonpartisan Legislative Analyst\u2019s Office also recommended lawmakers reject Newsom\u2019s proposal. California\u2019s budget outlook improved this year after tax revenues came in higher than expected, but budget hawks say new discretionary spending should be avoided because of future structural deficits.<\/p>\n<p>Critics of Newsom were dubious when he said he would also ease the transition for California\u2019s next governor by redirecting funds to future reserves. <\/p>\n<p>Few knew Newsom\u2019s budget would be equally kind to California\u2019s ex-governors.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
