The campaign did not contact CHP or request a security escort.\u201d <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"\/>\n<p>Video of a confrontation between agitators and Steyer\u2019s team in the alley showed several individuals scuffling as protesters screamed at the billionaire as he apparently took shelter in his SUV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s your position on reparations, Tom Steyer? How are you going to cut the check?\u201d one yelled, referring to Steyer\u2019s support of paying the descendants of enslaved black Americans during his failed 2020 presidential bid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t ever come back to Africatown,\u201d another shouted at the vehicle tried to pull.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Video of a confrontation between agitators and Steyer\u2019s team in the alley showed several individuals scuffling as protesters screamed at the billionaire as he apparently took shelter in his SUV. <span class=\"credit\">X\/@MaeveReston<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A third walked toward the SUV\u2019s driver side and appeared to condemn Steyter directly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey Tom Steyer, I better not catch you over here with those devil blue eyes. I better not catch you over here Tom Steyer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Reston reported that Steyer wasn\u2019t able to leave until a California Highway Police officer arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Protester Dennae Wright, a 44-year-old social worker, told the journalist that she wasn\u2019t surprised by the protest. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack people are really kind of tired of the Democratic Party always coming around during election season for our votes,\u201d Wright said. \u201cIt\u2019s a brand new day. You can\u2019t come over here offering us symbolism, dancing, singing, pats on the back, and think we\u2019re gonna vote for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democratic State Sen. Lola Smallwood-Cuevas, who co-hosted the event with Steyer, praised the candidate for showing up but showed little surprise at the protest.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Tom Steyer\u2019s SUV is surrounded by protesters in Leimert Park. <span class=\"credit\">X\/@MaeveReston<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis is Leimert Park and this is where Africatown protests, so we knew that going in, but I appreciate that Tom is courageous and he meets the community where they\u2019re at,\u201d Smallwood-Cuevas told Reston. \u201cHe\u2019s always been on the front line and I think that\u2019s what people packed the house today to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Steyer is considered a top candidate for California governor. <\/p>\n<p>An Emerson College poll conducted earlier this month showed the billionaire tied for second place with Republican Steve Hilton at 17% support. Xavier Becerra led the poll with 19% support.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear if Steyer can make the top two when voters after voters hit the polls for the June 2 primary.
