As you said, now there\u2019s over 500 cases. There\u2019s close to 150 deaths already, and it\u2019s moving very rapidly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The London-based MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis has estimated the true number of cases could be more than 1,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe true magnitude remains uncertain,\u201d it said\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Dr. Robert Redfield fears the Ebola outbreak could become \u201ca very significant pandemic.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">NewsNation \/ YouTube<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The infection marks the 17th Ebola outbreak in the DRC since 1976 \u2013 with the most recent ending in December 2025, according to the CDC.<\/p>\n<p>There is no absolute cure for Bundibugyo and World Health Organization special adviser Dr. Vasee Moorthy warned it could take six to nine months for a vaccine to become available.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Redfield spoke about an \u201cexperimental vaccine that\u2019s been in trials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the virus spreading in pockets of Congo, schools and churches are open \u2013 with only some people wearing masks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Locals walk past a burning Ebola treatment center in the Congo. <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At one hospital in Ituri, Ebola patients were placed on the same ward with those suffering from other illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>A Doctors Without Borders team identified suspected cases over the weekend at Bunia\u2019s Salama hospital but found no available isolation ward in the area, said Trish Newport, an emergency program manager.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery health facility they called said, \u2018We\u2019re full of suspect cases. We don\u2019t have any space.\u2019 This gives you a vision of how crazy it is right now,\u201d she said on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Richard Lokudu, a hospital director, said, \u201cWe hope for the proper triage and isolation facilities to be installed today, and if that doesn\u2019t happen, we will be completely overwhelmed,\u201d noting patients are \u201cscattered\u201d throughout the building.<\/p>\n<p>There is a lack of handwashing stations and people are continuing with their \u201cnormal lives,\u201d Ch\u00e9rubin Kuku Ndilawa, a civil society leader, said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A health worker is disinfected after leaving an isolation area at a Congo hospital. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>American native Peter Stafford, who was working as a medical missionary in the DRC, has tested positive for the virus and is being treated in Berlin, Germany.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore I was evacuated, I was really concerned I wasn\u2019t going to make it, and now I\u2019m cautiously optimistic,\u201d he told the Christian missions organization, Serge.<\/p>\n<p>Scott Myhre, Serge\u2019s Area Director for East and Central Africa, said Thursday Stafford was \u201ccritically ill but not acutely deteriorating.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Medical staff in hazmat suits carrying an Ebola patient on a stretcher to a Congolese treatment center. <span class=\"credit\">AP Photo\/Moses Sawasawa<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The CDC says the risk to Americans remains low but precautions are still being taken, however.<\/p>\n<p>An Air France flight bound for Detroit, Michigan, was diverted to Montreal, Canada, Wednesday amid fears over one passenger\u2019s exposure to the virus.<\/p>\n<p>US officials stopped the flight from entering the country after it was revealed a passenger from the Democratic Republic of Congo was allowed to board \u201cin error,\u201d US Customs and Border Protection told CBS News.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A hospital visitor had his temperature taken before entering.  <span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cDue to entry restrictions put in place to reduce the risk of the Ebola virus, the passenger should not have boarded the plane,\u201d a CBP spokesperson told the outlet. \u201cCBP took decisive action and prohibited the flight carrying that traveler from landing at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, and instead, diverted to Montreal, Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CDC and the Department of Homeland Security on Monday implemented heightened measures, including enhanced travel screening, restricted entry and public health measures to prevent Ebola from entering the country.<\/p>\n<p>Non-US passport holders who have been in Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan within the past 21 days are banned from entering the country.<\/p>\n<p>The Ebola outbreak has forced the Congo soccer team to switch up its plans ahead of flying to Houston where it will be based for this year\u2019s World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>The team has been forced to ax a send-off ceremony with the country\u2019s head of state, Felix Tshisekedi,  and will train in Belgium. <\/p>\n<p><em>With Post wires.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
