I will say that when I\u2019m in office, I have on more of a brave face,\u201d one Bay Area-based employee, who has been with CEO\u00a0Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s company for more than a decade, told the\u00a0San Francisco Standard\u00a0anonymously. \u201cI definitely spend a good amount of that time sort of despondent somewhere in my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The employee noted the job has been \u201cchaos,\u201d as the company is gearing up to let go of thousands of workers on what is expected to be a Wednesday-morning bloodbath \u2014 nearly 500 of those jobs are in the Bay Area\u2019s concentrated tech sector. By the time I get that email, I will already have lost access to all of my work accounts and everything internal,\u201d the employee noted. \u201cSo if I am impacted, I won\u2019t have any way to figure out who else was other than going on LinkedIn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Employees have had to get creative to figure out what is going on, given the lack of transparency about the layoffs.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Meta CEO\u00a0Mark Zuckerberg is shedding headcount to bankroll multibillion-dollar pivots into artificial intelligence. <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The anonymous employee, an engineer, once created a spreadsheet tool to track employees\u2019 layoff status \u2014 a resource they still keep privately.<\/p>\n<p>They described Meta\u2019s layoff process as impersonal, noting that workers often learn someone was let go only after checking their internal profile and seeing it marked \u201cdeactivated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The employee said working at Meta or in the tech industry is a tradeoff, and the bloodbath has been difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel torn. Working here is not easy,\u201d they told the\u00a0San Francisco website. \u201cThe pain of working here is not very well understood. It\u2019s this grand calculus of what it costs to live in the Bay Area and what personal sacrifices you are willing to make and what you\u2019re willing to do for money.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Billionaire Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan attend the 2026 Met Gala celebrating \u201cCostume Art\u201d in New York City. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images for The Met Museum\/Vogue<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The latest anticipated job cuts at\u00a0Meta\u00a0arrive amid a broader tech industry upheaval, where companies are aggressively shedding headcount to bankroll multibillion-dollar pivots into artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Across the sector, this industry-wide AI-driven restructuring has resulted in roughly 110,000 tech layoffs so far in 2026 alone \u2014 following 125,000 cuts in 2025 and a massive peak of more than 260,000 in 2023, CNBC reported.<\/p>\n<p>Meta has been at the forefront of this downsizing.
